“Taking care of yourself doesn’t mean me first; it means me too.” – L.R. Knost
In a society that often glorifies relentless hustle, where burnout is a celebrated badge of honour and job descriptions demand thriving under pressure, the concept of self-care can feel like a distant luxury. Yet, as the timeless wisdom reminds us – “You can’t pour from an empty cup” and “You must put on your own oxygen mask first” – self-care isn’t just beneficial; it’s absolutely essential. While these phrases might induce an eye-roll from their overuse, their truth remains unwavering.
The Unseen Cost of Neglect
As a holistic practitioner, I’ve always championed self-care, keenly aware of the profound consequences when we neglect our own needs. Perhaps it’s a wisdom that comes with age; in my younger years, navigating demanding careers, I rarely acknowledged stress or the need to slow down. I perceived it as ‘fun,’ even as my body silently protested with back pain and teeth grinding. With no children, my schedule typically allows for seamless integration of self-care – my days, work, and leisure are largely my own. Unlike the ‘sandwich generation’ juggling children and aging parents, my own mother, in her eighties, has always been remarkably fit and independent.
When Life Throws a Curveball: A Personal Revelation
This comfortable equilibrium shattered last year when my mother suffered a fall requiring surgery. Living miles apart, our initial contact was by phone, my sister providing immediate support until her own family commitments called her home. I promised my mother I would be there for her hospital discharge and the crucial first weeks of recovery. As a location-independent professional, this was an easy decision, the least I could do. Flights booked, holiday cancelled, I prepared for an eight-week stay.
Despite a generally good relationship, the prospect of 24/7 cohabitation brought a slight apprehension. A previous extended stay during a course had proven challenging; our established routines clashed, and my own exam stress didn’t help. This time, I was determined to approach things differently.
Navigating the Caregiver Labyrinth
Upon arrival, my mother was still in hospital, her recovery progressing well, and her gratitude for my presence was palpable. Once home, while not requiring full-time care, a deluge of responsibilities descended: doctors’ appointments, physiotherapy, insurance calls, paperwork, home adaptations, and countless minor tasks that coalesced into an overwhelming mountain. All this, while simultaneously running my business and seeing clients remotely from her spare bedroom.
Each evening, my personal to-do list remained largely untouched. The most unsettling realization wasn’t the exhaustion, but the insidious acceptance of this state as ‘normal’ – a reality, I’m sure, for countless caregivers. I had, like so many, subconsciously adopted the belief that there was simply no space left for my own well-being. It’s an easy trap to fall into when confronted with harsh reality, far removed from theoretical ideals. I found myself in a relentless survival mode, merely functioning, spinning plates to keep everything afloat. From coordinating my mother’s care to managing my practice, I was on a hamster wheel, convinced I had no time for myself.
Reclaiming Minutes: The Power of ‘Stress Hygiene’
But a shift was imperative. I wanted our time together to be supportive, positive, and harmonious. This time, I heeded my own advice with renewed conviction. While my usual physical activities – cycling and tennis, vital for my mental and physical health – were impossible, I discovered the profound impact of just a few minutes each day dedicated to what I call ‘stress hygiene.’
Just a few minutes. This is the beauty of my preferred self-care practice: TRE (Tension Releasing Exercises). Requiring minimal time and adaptable to almost any location, TRE gently invites the body to engage its natural tremor mechanism, a powerful way to release accumulated tension and stress. It was in these stolen moments, amidst the chaos, that I found my anchor, proving that even when time is a luxury, self-care remains a non-negotiable necessity.
