Sony’s PS5 Paradox: Soaring Game Sales Amidst Persistent Console Shortages
Despite a challenging global landscape marked by the “RAMaggedon” crisis and escalating tariffs, Sony’s PlayStation division has once again demonstrated its formidable strength in the gaming market. While the company grapples with an ongoing struggle to meet the insatiable demand for its PlayStation 5 consoles, its software and network services segments are thriving, painting a complex picture of success and supply chain woes.
A Quarter of Contrasts: Revenue Up, Console Sales Down
In the second quarter of 2026, Sony reported a significant nine percent increase in revenue and an impressive 83 percent boost to profits year-over-year for its gaming division. This robust financial performance comes despite a notable dip in console sales, with only 2.6 million PS5 units sold compared to 4 million in the same period last year. Industry analysts and Sony itself point to persistent supply chain issues, rather than a lack of consumer interest, as the primary culprit for this disparity. This challenge is poised to intensify with the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19th, expected to unleash a fresh wave of console demand.
Digital Dominance and Blockbuster Hits
The strength of Sony’s software ecosystem is undeniable. Overall game sales surged by 9.8 million units compared to the previous year, encompassing both first- and third-party titles. A significant trend continues to be the rise of digital downloads, which accounted for a staggering 78 percent of full-game software sales this quarter, up from 72 percent last year. This digital shift, while a point of past controversy, is clearly a lucrative avenue for Sony, with software sales reaching 708.5 billion yen ($4.48 billion), a substantial increase from 629.3 billion yen ($3.98 billion) in Q2 2025. Furthermore, PlayStation Network services saw a healthy 19.5 percent growth, contributing 218.3 billion yen ($1.38 billion) to the coffers.
Individual titles are also making waves. Marvel’s Wolverine has emerged as a certified hit, selling 2.4 million copies within approximately 50 days of its November 4th release. While slightly behind the 3.3 million units of Ghost of Yotei moved since its October 2, 2025 launch, Wolverine’s performance underscores the appeal of exclusive PlayStation content.
The 100 Million Milestone and Future Hurdles
With 97.9 million PS5 consoles sold since its June 2020 launch, Sony is on the cusp of a monumental milestone: 100 million units. This figure is all but guaranteed to be surpassed during the upcoming holiday quarter. However, the impending arrival of GTA VI, with its reported $750 million in pre-orders across PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, casts a long shadow over Sony’s ability to adequately stock shelves. The PS5 Pro, in particular, remains exceptionally popular, with some retailers resorting to lottery systems to combat scalping.
Despite earlier assurances from Sony about securing sufficient memory, recent reports indicate a more cautious outlook. Distribution partners have reportedly been informed that “temporary market supply constraints and high demand” will continue to restrict console availability well into next year. This suggests that while gamers are eager to buy, and Sony is excelling at selling games, the fundamental challenge of getting consoles into players’ hands will persist for the foreseeable future.
