Brno, often playfully referred to as Prague’s smaller cousin, is anything but small when it comes to creative energy. With a substantial population and a vibrant student community of around 80,000, this Czech city provides fertile ground for innovation, technology, craft, and hands-on experimentation. It’s no surprise, then, that Maker Faire Brno has firmly hit its stride, with makers leading the charge and transforming the city into a bustling hub of ingenuity.

Since its inception in 2019, Maker Faire Brno has blossomed, now attracting approximately 7,500 visitors and hundreds of makers from across Czechia and beyond. A pivotal partner in this growth has been Fab Lab Brno, collaborating closely with the Make More team—the driving force behind all Czech Maker Faires—to meticulously build this thriving community, one maker at a time.

The Magic of the Venue: Brno’s Exhibition Halls

The upcoming eighth edition of Maker Faire Brno, set for October 17–18, promises to be an extraordinary experience, with momentum building year after year. Much of the event’s allure lies in its magnificent venue: Brno’s Exhibition Halls. These halls are perfectly suited for the Faire, boasting striking architecture, soaring ceilings, abundant natural light, and even a planetarium! Its sprawling main hall, complemented by countless intriguing nooks and crannies, invites endless exploration. Around every corner, visitors will encounter curiosity in action, clever engineering, imaginative experiments, and truly remarkable maker talent.

Prusa: Fueling Czech Ingenuity

A name synonymous with the maker movement, Prusa, fresh from its appearance at Maker Faire Bay Area, is bringing its innovative spirit directly to Brno. Prusa has been a significant catalyst for the proliferation of Maker Faires across the Czech Republic, embodying Czech ingenuity through its integrated, in-house manufacturing approach. Their success is a testament to what can be achieved when making is placed at the very core of a business model.

This year, attendees have the exciting opportunity to engage with a brand-new Prusa 3D printer. Participants are invited to join the Maker Challenge, demonstrating how a creative idea combined with 3D printing can breathe new life into discarded items, transforming them into useful, functional tools. And for those who truly impress, there’s a chance to take home a new printer to ignite their next big idea. Can’t make it to Brno? Prusa will also be showcasing its innovations at Maker Faire Rome the following week!

10 Projects to Spark Your Imagination

Maker Faire is a unique crucible where the traditional boundaries between engineering, art, science, and everyday problem-solving delightfully blur. The following ten projects from Brno offer a glimpse into the incredible breadth and creativity on display, ranging from advanced 3D-printed audio solutions and DIY electronics to sustainable uses for garden waste, accessible technology, and engaging mechanical tinkering. Featured Innovations:

  • Acoustika 3D: A Speaker You Can Deconstruct
What happens when a passion for Drum & Bass merges with engineering prowess and 3D printing? The answer is SIMPLIXITY, a custom-designed 3D-printed loudspeaker. Visitors can delve into its inner workings, explore its components, and understand how enclosure design fundamentally shapes the sound quality.
  • Sublisica: From Fleeting Bubble to Enduring Glass
Tiny, frozen soap-bubble crystals serve as the unexpected genesis for a captivating blend of photography, chemistry, and design. Faced with the limitations of off-the-shelf tools, maker Jan Grygerek ingeniously engineered his own engraving machine to permanently capture these ephemeral patterns on glass.
  • Biouhel: Transforming Garden Waste into “Black Gold”
Those neglected piles of pruned branches in your garden hold surprising potential. This project demonstrates how they can be converted into biochar—a porous, carbon-rich material that significantly enhances soil’s ability to retain water and nutrients. It’s a brilliant example of how simple ingenuity can transform yard waste into a valuable resource with long-term carbon-storage benefits.
  • Inside Masaryk University’s Computer Science Labs
Computer science comes to life with interactive exhibits, including a robot that draws with a pen and a marionette controlled by your own movements. These research projects make complex algorithms, robotics, and human-computer interaction tangible and playful, showcasing how maker education can intersect with hard science.
  • 3Dfil.cz: A Playground for 3D Printing Enthusiasts
Curious about the endless possibilities emerging from a print bed? This exhibit invites exploration of various materials, equipment, and applications, from FDM and resin printing to specialized high-strength uses. It’s an invaluable opportunity to compare different technologies and gather inspiration for your next ambitious build.
  • Bearings in Action: Deconstruct and Reconstruct
Skateboards, bikes, and roller skates all depend on a crucial yet often overlooked mechanical component: the bearing. Here, visitors can get hands-on, practicing the removal and reinstallation of bearings, mastering the tools and techniques essential for keeping everyday gear smoothly rolling.
  • KAMaRAD: Advanced Radar for Road Safety
Traditional cameras have limitations, especially in challenging visibility conditions. This innovative prototype from Brno University of Technology integrates sensors with millimeter-wave radar to detect potential hazards, significantly enhancing safety for cyclists and other vulnerable road users.
  • Bača Customs: Craft Your Own Wooden Gravity Racer
No batteries? No problem! This mobile workshop offers a delightful experience where participants can sand, paint, assemble, and customize their very own wooden gravity racer. It’s a perfect blend of traditional craft, mechanical reasoning, and the pure joy of creating a toy that truly moves.
