X Launches ‘Original Content Rewards’: A New Chapter for Creators?
In a landscape marked by constant evolution and, at times, considerable upheaval for digital creators, X (formerly Twitter) is once again reshaping its approach to creator monetization. Following a period of revisions under Elon Musk’s leadership, the platform is discontinuing its previous revenue-sharing model, making way for an entirely new initiative: the ‘Original Content Rewards’ program, set to launch on September 8th.
Redefining Creator Compensation on X
This latest strategic pivot by X signals a clear intent to foster a different kind of engagement and reward system. The shift comes after a tumultuous few years for creators navigating the platform’s changing policies, and this new program aims to address some of the criticisms leveled against its predecessor.
Eligibility and Earning Potential
To participate in the ‘Original Content Rewards’ program, creators must meet a stringent set of criteria designed to ensure a baseline of engagement and authenticity. Eligibility requires:
- A minimum of 500 verified followers.
- At least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users within the last 90 days.
Once eligible, earnings will be calculated based on “qualified impressions” generated by “original content.” Qualified impressions are specifically defined as unique views from Premium subscribers on the Home Timeline feed, where at least 50% of the post is visible. This focus on Premium subscribers suggests an effort to tie rewards more directly to the platform’s paying user base.
What Constitutes ‘Original Content’?
The definition of “original content” is crucial to the success and fairness of the new program. X’s guidelines aim to be comprehensive, encompassing a variety of creative outputs:
- Original reporting or in-depth analysis.
- Videos and photos captured directly by the user.
- Graphics, illustrations, and even memes created by the user.
- Commentary or reactions that genuinely “add something meaningful” to the conversation.
This broad definition seeks to encourage diverse forms of creativity while setting clear boundaries against low-effort content.
A Stance Against Clickbait and Loopholes
The core philosophy behind the ‘Original Content Rewards’ program is to move away from incentivizing tactics that exploit loopholes or rely on clickbait. X explicitly states that simply repurposing content from others or merely replying to posts will no longer be a viable path to income under the new system. Allegra Jacchia, Senior Product Manager for Creators at SpaceXAI, articulated this vision clearly, stating that the program is designed to “reward the creators who bring original ideas, expertise, creativity, and unique perspectives to 𝕏 — not those who have become best at gaming the system.”
For creators currently participating in the previous revenue-sharing model, earnings will continue through September 7th, providing a brief transition period before the new program takes full effect. This shift represents a significant move by X to cultivate a more authentic and value-driven content ecosystem, challenging creators to innovate and engage in more meaningful ways.
