Fans will recall the grim discovery in Episode 4, where Aegon and Larys stumbled upon Sunfyre’s seemingly lifeless corpse in the forest. Locals had even turned the fallen beast into a macabre attraction. Only Aegon, with an unwavering conviction, believed his dragon might still live. And, against all odds, he was right.
The profound, almost mystical connection between a Targaryen and their dragon offers the most plausible explanation. While many dismissed Sunfyre as dead, Aegon’s unique bond may have allowed him to sense the lingering spark of life within his companion. Perhaps Sunfyre, much like his rider after the brutal battle at Rook’s Rest, simply needed an extended period to recover. It’s conceivable that the dragon entered a state akin to a coma, and Aegon’s presence or voice, even from episodes prior, slowly roused him back to consciousness, just in time for a dramatic, life-saving intervention.

Sunfyre’s return is more than just a spectacular moment of television; it’s a game-changer for the war. Team Green, having suffered significant losses, now boasts the formidable, if scarred, Golden Dragon once more.
