Senator Blumenthal Launches New Probe into Tether-Bo Hines Payments

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, the leading Democrat on the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, has intensified his scrutiny of stablecoin behemoth Tether, initiating a new probe into alleged payments made to a consulting firm co-founded by former White House crypto adviser, Bo Hines.

The investigation centers on reports that Hines’ firm, Nxum Group, received millions from Tether while Hines was still actively shaping stablecoin policy within the Trump administration. This development adds another layer to Blumenthal’s extensive examination of the cryptocurrency sector, particularly his focus on Tether’s operations and financial entanglements.

Ethical and Legal Concerns Raised

In a series of letters dispatched to Tether and Nxum Group, Senator Blumenthal articulated grave concerns regarding the nature of their business relationship. “The highly unusual terms and nature of Tether’s business relationship with both Nxum and Bo Hines raise alarming ethical and legal concerns,” Blumenthal wrote to Tether CEO Paulo Ardoino. He further suggested that Tether was “likely well aware of the illegality and impropriety of issuing payments to a current White House official with such a direct role in shaping cryptocurrency legislation that was instrumental to its business.”

The Wall Street Journal previously reported on Nxum’s substantial earnings from consulting work for Tether during Hines’ tenure as a crypto policy adviser to President Donald Trump. Blumenthal has formally requested detailed information regarding these financial arrangements.

Nxum Group’s Background and Tether’s Silence

Nxum Group, co-founded by Hines and his father, reportedly lacked significant political experience or a substantial track record prior to its engagement with Tether. CoinDesk was the first to reveal that the firm was generating millions as a primary campaign-advertising provider for a political action committee linked to Tether. Following Hines’ departure from the White House to become Tether’s top U.S. executive, Nxum has brought on another former White House crypto adviser, Harry Jung.

As of this report, spokespeople for Tether have not responded to requests for comment regarding Senator Blumenthal’s latest inquiry.

Blumenthal’s Broad Crypto Oversight

This new investigation is part of a broader, aggressive push by Senator Blumenthal into the cryptocurrency space. His previous probes have targeted a range of entities and activities, including former President Trump’s memecoin projects, crypto backers of presidential initiatives, the Trump family’s crypto firm World Liberty Financial, and operations at Binance. Notably, he has maintained a consistent focus on Tether, previously issuing a report on its alleged financial connections to Iran and demanding transparency regarding its ties to U.S. financial partner Cantor Fitzgerald.

Tether’s CEO, Paulo Ardoino, has publicly criticized Blumenthal’s investigative methods, claiming the senator disregarded crucial information and released his report to the press without offering the company an opportunity to review or respond.

Political Stakes and Future Implications

While Democrats have been in the Senate minority during Trump’s presidency, recent shifts in political dynamics suggest an improved chance for the party to regain control of the chamber. Should Blumenthal ascend to chair the investigations subcommittee, his powers—including the ability to subpoena and dictate the investigative agenda—would significantly expand. He has made it unequivocally clear that cryptocurrency oversight would remain a top priority under such circumstances. Prediction markets currently assign Democrats a 69% probability of securing the Senate majority.

The ongoing investigations underscore a growing regulatory and political interest in the opaque dealings of the cryptocurrency industry, particularly concerning potential conflicts of interest and the influence of digital asset firms on policy-making.
