Standard Chartered Pioneers Institutional Stablecoin Custody in Dubai, Eyes LMAX Collateral Integration

In a landmark move poised to reshape institutional engagement with digital assets, global banking titan Standard Chartered has announced its Dubai branch is now offering regulated institutional custody for Ripple’s dollar-pegged stablecoin, RLUSD, on the XRP Ledger. This development provides eligible clients with a secure, regulated banking environment for holding the burgeoning digital currency.

Beyond mere custody, Standard Chartered is also charting an ambitious course with Ripple and LMAX Group, a prominent institutional trading venue for foreign exchange and digital assets. The collaboration aims to allow clients to leverage RLUSD held at Standard Chartered as collateral for trading on LMAX’s platform, a strategic initiative that, while subject to testing, regulatory approvals, and documentation, signals a significant leap forward for stablecoin utility in institutional finance.

Unlocking New Possibilities: Custody Meets Collateral

The planned integration with LMAX Group is particularly noteworthy. It seeks to enable clients to back their trades with RLUSD held securely at Standard Chartered, eliminating the need to transfer the stablecoin directly to the trading venue. This innovative approach effectively separates custody from execution, allowing the bank to safeguard the tokens while their value is recognized as collateral by the trading platform.

This model is expected to resonate strongly with banks, funds, and other institutional players who are keen to participate in stablecoin trading but are hesitant to entrust their assets to a trading venue directly. Joseph Goh, head of Asia-Pacific at Singapore-based crypto investment bank Areta, underscored the significance, stating, “Regulated custody connected to a global systemically important bank is becoming one of the most valuable pieces of infrastructure in digital assets.”

Strategic Imperatives: Safeguarding Assets and Expanding Utility

Waqar Chaudry, Standard Chartered’s global head of digital assets, securities services, and transaction services, articulated the bank’s client-centric philosophy: “Institutional clients want to participate in digital asset markets without compromising on how their assets are safeguarded or how risk is managed.” This initiative directly addresses those concerns, offering a robust framework for digital asset management.

For Ripple, this partnership is a crucial step in cementing RLUSD’s position as a premier settlement and collateral asset for institutions. Ripple’s commitment to this vision was evident earlier this year when it provided LMAX with $150 million in financing to integrate the stablecoin into its institutional infrastructure. Should the LMAX link materialize, it would significantly broaden RLUSD’s application beyond payments and spot settlement, embedding it deeper into the collateral systems underpinning institutional trading.

Standard Chartered’s Growing Digital Footprint

This latest announcement is part of a broader, aggressive expansion by Standard Chartered into the digital asset space. The bank has been steadily bolstering its custody operations across various financial hubs. Just last week, it revealed plans to offer institutional clients in Singapore custody for selected cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, and tokenized real-world assets. This follows its full acquisition of Zodia Custody earlier in the year and its pioneering role as the first bank to distribute one of Hong Kong’s two regulated stablecoins in August.

By offering regulated custody and exploring innovative collateral solutions, Standard Chartered is not just participating in the digital asset revolution; it’s actively shaping its institutional future, providing the secure and compliant infrastructure necessary for mainstream adoption.
