The early days of the Iran conflict saw the US resorting to firing $4 million Patriot missiles at $35,000 Iranian drones – an unsustainable and financially draining strategy that rapidly depleted vital interceptor stockpiles.

Unlimited Ammunition, Unmatched Efficiency

This is where modern laser weapons offer a game-changing advantage. Unlike conventional munitions, lasers boast an effectively limitless supply of “ammunition,” constrained only by their power source. “Basically, you can keep firing them as long as you’ve got power,” Lewis explains. While challenges like rapid refire and recharge rates persist, their resolution promises a highly effective solution against complex threats like drone swarms.

From Testing Grounds to Global Deployment

The US military is currently engaged in a flurry of laser weapon development and deployment activities. The Navy has already equipped two ships with laser “dazzlers” to blind drone sensors, while the Air Force’s European and African commands have deployed Boeing’s Compact Laser Weapons System. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently observed a comprehensive demonstration of directed-energy projects at the Army’s White Sands, New Mexico, test range, signaling high-level interest.

Overcoming Early Obstacles

The path to operational readiness hasn’t been without its bumps. Four Raytheon air-defense laser-equipped vehicles were withdrawn from the Middle East due to soldier feedback. More notably, an AeroVironment laser stationed on the southern US border mistakenly targeted a party balloon, leading to a temporary airspace closure, and later, accidentally shot down a Border Patrol drone. However, these incidents, rather than deterring progress, inadvertently served as proof-of-concept, demonstrating the laser’s capability to neutralize aerial threats.

The E-HEL Program: A Strategic Investment

The Pentagon and its defense contractors have been in a frantic race to develop effective countermeasures against mass-produced, low-cost attack drones, especially after a tragic incident in March where an Iranian drone killed six US service members. While various solutions – from radio frequency jammers to drone-killing drones – have been explored, none have offered a standalone answer.

Following the White Sands demonstration and assurances of safe operation in crowded airspace, the Army is now expected to finalize a multi-million dollar contract with AeroVironment. This deal, potentially for up to 20 units of the Enduring High Energy Laser (E-HEL), will equip forces with compact systems capable of fitting into a four-by-seven-foot container or atop an all-terrain vehicle. These powerful lasers are designed to neutralize one-way attack drones like Iran’s formidable Shahed-136, as highlighted by former President Donald Trump, who lauded the “incredible” and cost-effective nature of the technology.

The true significance of the E-HEL lies in its designation as an “operational program.” This signifies a shift from experimental deployment to a fully integrated, strategic component of the US Army’s defense capabilities, ushering in a new era of laser warfare.
