Titled “Geometry of Play,” this innovative installation marks a significant milestone as Pittsburgh’s first artist-designed pickleball courts. It stands as a centerpiece among seven other public art commissions at Arts Landing, a visionary new gathering space developed by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
Ray’s design draws its profound inspiration from the visual logic of historic game boards, particularly the ancient Indian game Pachisi (the precursor to the American favorite, Parcheesi). The mural is a kaleidoscopic tapestry of interlocking circles, triangles, grids, and pathways, meticulously layered across the court boundaries. Spanning the entire ROYGBIV color spectrum, the rainbow palette serves as a powerful symbol of inclusion, while also creating shifting visual relationships that evolve as players move across the surface. This ingenious approach ensures that the artwork is not static; it changes and comes alive with every game played, reinforcing pickleball’s reputation as an accessible, social sport and transforming the courts into a vibrant civic hub for recreation and community gathering.
Sharmistha Ray’s Interdisciplinary Vision
The “Geometry of Play” commission is a testament to Sharmistha Ray’s expansive interdisciplinary practice, which fluidly spans painting, installation, and public art. Born in Kolkata and raised in Kuwait before establishing her career in the United States, Ray consistently weaves elements of South Asian visual traditions into her work. Through geometric abstraction, she explores profound themes of identity, belonging, and cultural exchange, offering viewers and participants alike a rich, layered experience.
Her impressive portfolio includes a large-scale installation at New York’s iconic Grand Central Terminal, a significant commission for Pittsburgh International Airport’s new terminal, and captivating animated works set to original scores by Grammy Award-winning musician Arooj Aftab.
Arts Landing: A New Cultural Hub for Pittsburgh
Designed by the renowned landscape architecture firm Field Operations, the $31 million Arts Landing development is a transformative addition to Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. It seamlessly integrates public art, live performances, recreational opportunities, and diverse community programming into a cohesive urban experience. “Geometry of Play” is in esteemed company, joining installations by a roster of celebrated artists including Vanessa German, Thaddeus Mosley, Shikeith, Mikael Owunna and Marques Redd, Lenka Clayton and Phillip Andrew Lewis, Darian Johnson, and John Peña. These inaugural commissions are slated to remain on view for at least one year.
