Get ready for a nostalgic trip down memory lane, as Lego unveils its latest triumph for adult collectors: a fully functional Donkey Kong arcade machine. This isn’t just a static display piece; it’s an interactive marvel that allows the original hero, Jumpman (who would later become Mario), to endlessly leap over a cascade of iconic barrels. What makes this release even more special? Reports indicate that none other than Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary creator of Donkey Kong and Mario, is thoroughly impressed.

Reliving the Arcade Classic, Brick by Brick

While not a perfect digital replica, this Lego creation captures the spirit of the 1981 arcade sensation with remarkable ingenuity. Designed by Lego veteran Carl Merriam, known for his work on beloved sets like the Lego Nintendo Game Boy and Piranha Plant, this Donkey Kong cabinet offers a unique, tactile gaming experience. Jumpman, the precursor to Mario, can be controlled with a working joystick for left-right movement and a button for jumping. A simple lever unleashes an infinite stream of barrels, challenging players to master the timing of their leaps.

Merriam reveals a fascinating detail: the barrels themselves are a nod to Lego history, being the same elements first released in 1989 for the company’s pirate sets. His biggest design hurdle? Ensuring these barrels rolled slowly and smoothly without jamming. “I rolled thousands of barrels down those tracks to figure it out,” he shared, highlighting the dedication to authentic playability.

Miyamoto’s Seal of Approval and Nintendo’s Touch

The collaboration between Lego and Nintendo is well-known, and this set is no exception. While Merriam hasn’t personally met Shigeru Miyamoto, he received word that the gaming icon is “very happy with the execution of this set.” Nintendo’s involvement wasn’t just supervisory; they even offered a specific, quirky piece of feedback: “One small request was to make the poison barrels heavier than the regular ones, so we added Minifigure heads inside them.” This attention to detail underscores the commitment to authenticity and fan delight.

For those looking to expand the narrative, the new Jumpman Lego element is detachable, allowing for imaginative play, perhaps even reuniting him with a more empowered Pauline.

The Engineering Marvel: Endless Barrels and Responsive Controls

Curious about the mechanics behind this brick-built arcade? Merriam generously shared insights into the set’s intricate workings:

How the Infinite Barrel Mechanism Functions

The barrel system operates like a clever pump. A stack of 14 barrels runs up the side of the model. Each pull of the barrel lever adds one barrel to the bottom of the stack while simultaneously releasing one from the top. The system can hold 20 barrels in total, allowing for up to six barrels to be rolling down the tracks at any given moment. These barrels then collect in a hopper at the bottom, which is connected back to the pump, creating a truly “infinite barrel loop” – a delightful “barrels of fun,” as Merriam puts it.

The primary challenge in its design was achieving that signature slow, consistent roll without jams. This was meticulously engineered using a combination of Lego steps, studs, slopes, bows, and slightly thinner Technic beams to perfectly emulate the game’s original feel. Merriam humorously recounts, “I rolled thousands of barrels down those tracks to figure it out… Those barrels drove me bananas!”

Getting the barrels from the bottom back to the top was another significant hurdle. After experimenting with various complex solutions, the designer found the simplest and most effective answer: “simply a lot more barrels.”

Jumpman’s Movement: A Mechanical Masterpiece

Jumpman’s movements are equally ingenious. The joystick controls his left-to-right motion via a long lever connected to a “dingler” at the back of the model. His iconic jump is powered by a mechanism akin to a piano key. Pressing the jump button activates a see-saw lever that pushes a long rod, lifting Jumpman. Releasing the button allows gravity to return him to his starting position.
