A Return to Roots: Joyce Wang Studio’s Vision for The Landmark

More than ten years after its initial, transformative touch, Joyce Wang Studio has once again left an indelible mark on the Mandarin Oriental The Landmark, Hong Kong. This second, comprehensive renovation breathes new life into the hotel’s 109 rooms and suites, the majestic mansion foyer, the serene spa, and the reimagined former MO Bar. This latest endeavor, captured beautifully by Common Studio, deepens the hotel’s connection to the vibrant soul of Hong Kong.

Joyce Wang, the visionary principal behind the studio, reveals that the recent brief placed a heightened emphasis on the hotel’s intrinsic link to its city. “We drew inspiration from the colonial country manors frequented by the Tai Kwuns of a bygone era, celebrating the enduring beauty of these historic homes that continue to captivate today,” she explains. “Our vision this time is profoundly rooted in local relevance and the rich heritage of the building itself.”

The ‘Lived-in Mansion’ Aesthetic: A Homage to Hong Kong’s Past

The core of this redesign revolves around the evocative concept of a ‘lived-in mansion’ – a nod to Hong Kong’s numerous historical residences. The chosen colour palette, anchored by lush greens and warm oranges, directly references the city’s verdant gardens and the distinctive terracotta hues of its colonial architecture. This thoughtful selection immediately grounds the guest experience in the local landscape.

An Arrival of Grandeur and Detail

Within the lobby and the meticulously crafted arrival sequence, classic architectural gestures seamlessly blend with contemporary detailing. Guests are greeted by a symphony of exquisite materials: polished stone, rich timber, tactile textured wallcoverings, and custom eglomisé glass. An elegantly undulating staircase, strategically placed artwork bays, and sculptural plinths guide visitors through an entrance designed to evoke the stately welcome of a grand private residence.

Weaving the City’s Tapestry into Design

The iconic Hong Kong skyline isn’t merely a view from the windows; it’s a recurring motif woven throughout the building’s fabric. Joyce Wang Studio commissioned bespoke artworks featuring the city’s distinctive silhouette, translating them into luxurious carpets, intricate tapestries, and shimmering eglomisé glass for the lobby, elevators, and guestroom corridors. This artistic integration ensures the city’s pulse is felt at every turn.

Rooms with a Local Narrative

In the private sanctuaries of the guestrooms, custom rugs draw their patterns from Hong Kong’s historic brickwork, resting atop lightened timber floors. Cracked gesso wall finishes add a layer of aged elegance, complemented by a Fromental wallcovering that masterfully incorporates hand-painted and silk elements, creating a truly unique and tactile environment.

Art as Storyteller: A Curated Collection

From the project’s inception, art was an integral component of the design program. Wang emphasizes the rigorous nature of the artwork selection, stating, “there is a story behind each piece.” The curated collection showcases a compelling mix of works by both emerging and established artists, spanning local and international talents, enriching the hotel’s narrative.

Wang envisions the hotel as a sophisticated pied-à-terre, offering guests an intimate lens through which to experience the city. Sculptural vases, artisanal vessels, and other carefully chosen objects are arranged to convey the impression of treasures gathered over time within a cherished private home, fostering a sense of warmth and personal history.

A Distinctly Local Luxury

Collectively, these meticulously considered details imbue the Mandarin Oriental The Landmark with the layered character of a private residence. The pervasive references to Hong Kong’s architecture, vibrant landscape, and dynamic artistic community firmly anchor the design in its unique setting. This renovation transcends a mere update; it presents a more profound, distinctly local interpretation of luxury hospitality, inviting guests to immerse themselves fully in the spirit of Hong Kong.
