When a conversation is detected, audio enters a protected buffer in the Apple Watch’s Secure Exclave, is encrypted, and then securely transmitted via a special Bluetooth pairing to the Secure Exclave on the user’s iPhone. The audio is instantly deleted from the Apple Watch.

On the iPhone, local speech recognition and language models transcribe the audio, creating a minimal transcript by removing nonessential elements. The raw audio is then immediately deleted from the iPhone. A final safety model screens the text for potentially harmful terms before the distilled conversation is encrypted and sent to Private Cloud Compute.

Live Rewind: A 15-Second Memory Buffer

For those moments when you wish you could just “rewind” what was just said, Live Rewind continuously holds the last 15 seconds of ambient audio in the Secure Exclave buffer. This buffer operates on a rolling basis, meaning old audio is constantly replaced by new, preventing any accumulation. To obtain a transcription, users must consciously double-press the Apple Watch’s Digital Crown each time, ensuring deliberate activation.

The Cloud Component: Private Compute in Action

When features like Siri Recap require cloud processing, Apple’s Private Cloud Compute steps in. Alongside the encrypted, condensed transcripts, “contextual information” is also sent to enhance summary quality. This includes data like “Now Playing” information to understand speech origin (music/podcast), calendar data for accurate summary titles, and high-level location labels (home, work, school, city, state, country, point-of-interest categories like ‘grocery store’ or ‘park’). Importantly, precise location data and specific points of interest are explicitly excluded.

Finally, Apple’s foundation models within Private Cloud Compute generate a title and summary, which is then encrypted and sent back to both the iPhone and Apple Watch. Apple assures users that Siri Recap is designed to strip out sensitive personal identifiers, financial data, and ID numbers from its summaries.
