Huawei has unveiled its latest innovation in the foldable smartphone market, the Mate XT 2, a device that signals a clear strategic alignment with industry leader Samsung. The journey of Huawei’s trifold phones has seen an evolution in design philosophy. The original Mate XT, introduced in late 2024, featured an accordion-style fold. While innovative in its approach to eliminating a separate cover screen, this design left the delicate folding display vulnerable to external elements. Subsequent XT models largely retained this form factor. However, the new Mate XT 2 marks a significant pivot, drawing direct inspiration from Samsung’s trifold design. By folding both sides of its expansive 10.2-inch flexible screen inwards, Huawei aims to provide superior protection for the display, a critical improvement for the longevity and durability of foldable devices.

Perhaps the most intriguing addition to the Mate XT 2 is its privacy OLED display. This technology, strikingly similar to the one Samsung debuted in its Galaxy S26 Ultra, offers users an enhanced layer of security for their on-screen content. When activated, the display intelligently narrows the angles at which light is emitted, making the screen appear almost black to onlookers from the sides, while maintaining clear visibility for the user viewing it head-on. It is powered by the new Kirin 9050 Pro chipset, promising robust performance for demanding applications and multitasking. Durability is also a key focus, with an improved IP59 water-resistance rating, offering better protection against splashes and dust. For photography enthusiasts, the device features a versatile triple rear camera setup, though specific details on its capabilities are yet to be fully explored.
