Reid Hoffman Shifts Focus: From Microsoft Boardroom to Startup ‘Founder Mode’
After a decade of influential presence on Microsoft’s board, venture capitalist and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman is stepping down. The move, announced by Microsoft on Thursday, signals a renewed dedication to his latest artificial intelligence venture, Manus, where he aims to re-engage in ‘founder mode’.
A Profitable Tenure: LinkedIn Acquisition and OpenAI Investments
Hoffman’s journey with Microsoft began in 2016 following the tech giant’s monumental $26.2 billion acquisition of LinkedIn, the professional networking platform he co-founded. His time on the board coincided with several pivotal moments for Microsoft, notably its initial $1 billion investment into OpenAI in 2019. Hoffman himself was an early investor in OpenAI and served on its board until 2023, stepping down due to escalating potential conflicts of interest.
More recently, Hoffman was also a board member during Microsoft’s innovative $650 million ‘acqui-hire’ deal with his AI startup Inflection AI, which saw Inflection co-founder Mustafa Suleyman join Microsoft’s ranks.

The decision to depart Microsoft’s board comes as Hoffman expresses a fervent desire to immerse himself in Manus, an AI-driven drug discovery company. During a recent episode of his ‘Possible’ podcast, in conversation with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Hoffman articulated his readiness to transition back to an operational, hands-on role.
Manus, which successfully secured over $50 million in seed funding last year, counts Hoffman as an investor, co-founder, and chairman of the board. While he’s not the CEO – that role is held by Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, a Pulitzer Prize-winning physician and biologist – Hoffman’s enthusiasm for the company’s trajectory is palpable.
“One of the things I realized over the last month was that, we’re seeing such progress with Manus. I need to get back to founder mode,” Hoffman stated. He believes Manus is on the cusp of achieving “Move 37” AI, a concept referring to AI that surpasses human creativity, particularly in the complex field of chemistry and the critical fight against various cancers.
