ComfortDelGro Joins Singapore’s Autonomous Vehicle Race
However, ComfortDelGro, a leading transit operator in the region, is the latest company to receive approval for self-driving vehicle trials in Singapore.
Consequently, the company plans to roll out public rides by 2026 through its ride-hailing app, ComfortDelGro Zig.
Moreover, ComfortDelGro’s first batch of autonomous vehicles has successfully completed Milestone 1 trials, a crucial approval stage for AVs in Singapore.
Singapore’s Investments in Autonomous Vehicles
Meanwhile, Singapore’s government is also investing heavily in autonomous vehicles, with a 17-member committee established to drive the rollout of AVs.
In addition, Temasek Holdings, Singapore’s state investment company, has invested in several AV companies, including WeRide and Pony AI.
Therefore, Singaporeans can expect to see many AVs on its roads in the next five years, with the country planning to allow operators to start AV services with fixed routes in residential estates.
ComfortDelGro’s Ambitious Ventures
However, ComfortDelGro’s ambitions go beyond Singapore, with the company expanding internationally and partnering with robotaxi firms in China and other markets.
Consequently, the company’s Group CEO, Cheng Siak Kian, has called the partnership with Hello Robotaxi “a significant step in developing our autonomous vehicle capabilities and securing our long-term position in the future of point-to-point mobility.”
Moreover, ComfortDelGro is also investing in AVs, with the company expecting to welcome the first batch of passengers onto its AV fleet by early 2026.
Singapore’s Vision for Autonomous Vehicles
Meanwhile, Singapore’s acting transport minister, Jeffrey Siow, has called AVs a “game changer” for Singapore’s transport system.
In addition, Siow has envisioned that AVs will be deployed fairly extensively within the next five years, and will be a very useful addition to the public transport network.
Therefore, Singapore’s investments in AVs are expected to have a significant impact on the country’s transport sector, easing the manpower strain and improving efficiency.
