SKIN1004 Unveils SoHo Flagship: A Masterpiece of Layered Wood and Experiential Design

In the bustling heart of New York City’s SoHo district, Korean skincare sensation SKIN1004 has opened the doors to its first U.S. flagship, a nearly 9,900-square-foot marvel of architectural innovation. Designed by LMTLS Architecture, the space at 470 Broadway transcends conventional retail, inviting visitors into a meticulously crafted landscape of layered wood that blurs the lines between nature and design.

A Sculpted Interior: The Essence of Natural Topography

The defining feature of SKIN1004’s new flagship is its breathtaking interior, dominated by a sinuous mass of ultralight MDF. Each two-inch-thick layer, banded in stained maple veneer, stacks to form a continuous, undulating surface that stretches the length of the store. Bathed in warm ochre and umber tones, this wooden topography covers nearly every surface, creating an immersive environment that feels both organic and sophisticated.

LMTLS Architecture’s Vision: Expanding and Compressing Space

LMTLS Architecture embarked on an ambitious transformation, removing the existing second floor to create a dramatic double-height lounge at the entrance. This grand vestibule is designed not just for everyday visitors but also to host special events, setting an immediate tone of grandeur and versatility. As one progresses deeper into the store, the ceiling gracefully descends towards the point of sale before ascending once more into a serene chamber at the rear. This dynamic interplay of compression and expansion guides the visitor through a curated journey, enhancing the sense of discovery.

The Nature Wall: A Multifunctional Masterpiece

Central to the design is what LMTLS Architecture refers to as the ‘Nature Wall.’ This intricately milled form seamlessly integrates seating, product displays, and the sales counter into a single, continuous topography. Rather than segmenting these functions, the design resolves them into a unified, flowing landscape. Conceived as an abstraction of a natural valley, its stepped edges evoke the ancient, eroded sandstone formations where geological time is visibly etched in horizontal bands. The meticulous fabrication, handled by Gilbert and Adirondack Studios, involved precision-cutting each layer to profile before assembly, a testament to the project’s intricate craftsmanship.

The Illusion of Depth: The Mirror Wall

Running parallel to the Nature Wall, a nine-foot-high reflective plane, dubbed the ‘Mirror Wall,’ extends uninterrupted from the entrance to the very rear of the space. In a district where retail volumes often feel narrow, this ingenious element serves a crucial purpose: it reflects the intricate millwork, effectively doubling the apparent topography and pushing the perceived depth of the store far beyond its physical footprint. The result is an expansive, almost infinite vista that enhances the immersive quality of the design.

Illumination and Ambiance: A Warm Embrace

Throughout the flagship, illuminated surfaces from Cooledge are strategically integrated into the ceiling and casework. These fixtures cast a warm, diffuse light that perfectly complements the rich wood palette, creating an inviting and serene ambiance. A striking column, sheathed in brushed metal, anchors the space, carrying the SKIN1004 brand mark upward into an amorphous, glowing form overhead, a subtle yet powerful brand statement.

The Gallery Chamber: A Curated Experience

The journey culminates in the rear chamber, where the pace shifts, transforming product presentation into an art form. Here, items are displayed more like curated objects in a gallery than conventional retail merchandise. This intimate space also features a photo booth, framed by a twelve-foot-tall single-plane mirror, and an LED wall continuously looping brand films. It’s a poignant reflection of SKIN1004’s ethos: a brand built on ingredients from untouched natural landscapes now housed within a beautifully constructed one, offering an experience that is both retail and art.

The SKIN1004 flagship is open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 470 Broadway in New York, NY.
