Container Traffic: A New Peak
Container terminals at Tanger Med processed over 11.1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2025, marking an 8.4% surge from the previous year. This substantial increase was largely attributed to the successful commissioning of the new extension at the TC4 terminal, operated by APM Terminals, which significantly boosted the port’s handling capacity and operational fluidity.
Boosting Exports: Truck Traffic on the Rise
The port’s role in supporting national exports continued to strengthen, with truck traffic reaching 535,203 TIR trucks, a 3.6% increase. This growth was primarily fueled by robust exports of industrial goods, which saw a 4.8% rise, and agri-food products, climbing by 4.3%. These figures underscore Tanger Med’s critical function in connecting Moroccan producers to global markets.
Smooth Sailing for Passengers
Passenger traffic also experienced steady improvement, with 3.22 million travelers and 895,341 vehicles passing through the port, representing increases of 5.7% and 5% respectively. The successful implementation of a fixed-date ticket system during the Marhaba summer campaign in 2025 was credited with ensuring smoother, more orderly crossings and better alignment of passenger numbers with fleet capacity.
Navigating Diverse Cargo Flows
While some sectors saw adjustments, Tanger Med’s ability to manage diverse cargo types remained a key strength.
Liquid Bulk Surges, Solid Bulk Shifts
Liquid bulk cargo performed strongly, recording an impressive 13% rise to 8.64 million tons, reflecting consistent demand from the energy and industrial sectors. Conversely, solid bulk cargo experienced an 11% decline, totaling 522,493 tons, primarily due to shifts in cereal import patterns.
Automotive Sector Adjusts
Vehicle terminals handled 526,862 units, a 12% decrease from 2024. This total included significant exports from Renault’s Melloussa and SOMACA plants (327,569 units) and Stellantis Kenitra (126,874 units), alongside 39,751 transshipment vehicles. TMPA clarified that this reduction was a result of global automotive market fluctuations and adjustments in production schedules.
Operational Excellence and Strategic Vision
Despite a 4.5% decrease in total ship calls to 16,686, this was largely a strategic shift, as smaller RoPax vessels were replaced by larger ships capable of carrying more passengers and cargo. The port also welcomed 1,319 mega-ships over 290 meters, an 8.4% increase from 2024, benefiting from enhanced scheduling and operational management.
