Healing from Trauma: 5 Steps to Cope with Forgotten Childhood Memories

When trauma steals your childhood memories, it’s like walking into a wall. You can’t remember, and it’s heartbreaking. But there is hope.

Acknowledge the Pain

First, acknowledge the pain. Pain needs to be seen and felt to be released. I tried to wipe away my tears and pretend like nothing happened, but it resulted in years of anxiety and numbness. Nowadays, I welcome the pain and celebrate the tears. They are a sign of release.

Soothe and Regulate

Next, soothe and regulate your emotions. After allowing your feelings to surface, bring yourself to a more grounded place. I used deep, slow breaths, gentle touch, and walking in silence to help me relax.

Bring Yourself Back to the Present Moment

After letting grief take over, bring yourself back to the present moment. Shamelessly, I started talking to my inner child: “Girl, we got awesome birthday parties now! You are surrounded by love, and home feels safe.”

Make Plans for the Future

Make plans for the future. Focus on what you can give to yourself right now, whether that’s something tangible or emotionally based. I reflected on my conversation with my inner child and figured out my needs. Ask yourself what you need, and go all in.

Find Peace and Hope

Find peace and hope. Even though it’s heartbreaking, you can soothe your heart and find peace. That’s what happened to me on that day when I realized I couldn’t remember my birthday parties. I used these same steps to help me process my emotions and get back to my center.
