Samsung Galaxy XR Review: Needs More Polish
Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy XR headset has been sitting on my desk for several weeks, and I’ve finally mustered the energy to give it a try.
However, my experience with the Galaxy XR has been a mixed bag, with some impressive features and others that are still rough around the edges.
Consequently, I’d give the Galaxy XR a rating of 6 out of 10, and I think Samsung and Google have more work ahead of them to improve the Android XR experience.
Finding Comfort
However, finding a comfortable fit has been a challenge, with the headset often putting pressure on my forehead and making it difficult to wear for extended periods.
Moreover, the included forehead cushion helps a bit, but I wouldn’t have minded softer padding.
Therefore, I found Apple’s Vision Pro with the new Dual Knit Band to be much more supportive, with two points where you can customize the fit.
Visual Quality
However, the visual quality of Samsung’s 4K micro-OLED display is excellent, with sharp and colorful visuals that are a highlight of the Galaxy XR.
Moreover, I enjoyed watching a few episodes of Stranger Things season 5 on the headset, and I spent a fair amount of time playing Grimvalor with a paired PlayStation 5 DualSense controller.
Consequently, the visual quality of the Galaxy XR is one of its strongest features.
Navigation and Eye Tracking
However, the gesture-based navigation and eye tracking are fine, though not quite as precise as Apple’s system in the Vision Pro.
Moreover, sometimes the iris unlock wouldn’t work, forcing me to input my PIN to unlock the headset.
Therefore, I’d often have trouble getting the eye tracking to land on exactly the right virtual button, so I’d have to resort to the pointer-style finger gesture to make selections.
Android XR
However, one of the nice things about Android XR is that Samsung and Google aren’t starting from scratch in terms of the app ecosystem.
Moreover, you can pretty much access any Android app and bring it into your virtual space, though some apps are better designed for this experience than others.
Consequently, the ability to chat with Google’s Gemini chatbot is a key feature of Android XR.
