In the vibrant, rapidly expanding cityscape of Charlotte, North Carolina, a culinary transformation has taken root. What was once an unassuming eatery has been reborn as Napa Bistro and Wine Bar Stonecrest, a sophisticated destination meticulously crafted by the visionary team at FictionWorks. Drawing profound inspiration from the legendary 1976 Paris Wine Tasting, this new establishment masterfully marries the timeless allure of a French bistro with the rustic, understated elegance of a Napa Valley farmhouse.

A Vision of Approachability and Occasion

FictionWorks co-founders Andrea De Camps and Olivia King articulated their guiding principle: “The goal was to create a restaurant that feels approachable enough for a casual weeknight dinner while offering the sense of occasion people look for when celebrating a great meal and a bottle of wine.” This dual ambition is palpable throughout the 6,500-square-foot space, where every detail contributes to an atmosphere that is both inviting and refined.

From Taco Joint to Timeless Bistro: An Architectural Metamorphosis

The architectural blueprint, skillfully executed by In Situ Studio, orchestrates the expansive area into a series of interconnected rooms, each possessing its own distinct personality. A striking curved, vaulted ceiling, featuring a system by Baswa Acoustics, not only contributes to the interior’s spatial rhythm but also ingeniously softens the ambient sounds of a bustling dining environment. Within these thoughtfully scaled rooms, intimate seating areas adorned with worn leather upholstery beckon guests to unwind and immerse themselves in the surroundings.

One of the project’s most significant hurdles was reimagining an existing structure – a former taco restaurant – into a warm, wine-centric haven. FictionWorks approached this challenge with strategic precision, focusing investment on high-impact elements. The renovation, completed in a remarkable nine months, was a testament to intentional coordination, smart budgeting, and a clear design hierarchy. The result is a stunning metamorphosis from a flat, open layout into a sequence of layered rooms that evoke the comforting intimacy of a Napa Valley farmhouse.

Strategic Splurges and Thoughtful Savings

The Art of Impactful Design

The FictionWorks team revealed their discerning approach to budgeting: “We put the money into the details that would really make an impact—the stained-glass installation, custom lighting, and millwork—and we stayed more practical with the secondary elements—the tabletops, mosaic flooring, thrifted artwork, and accessories.” This philosophy allowed for a luxurious feel where it mattered most, without compromising the overall vision.

A Palette Inspired by Vineyards, History, and Parisian Chic

The restaurant’s captivating color palette is a harmonious blend of three core influences: the lush, verdant vineyards of Napa Valley, the warm, inviting interiors of the 1970s, and the sophisticated character of a Parisian bistro. Deep greens and rich wood tones are elegantly punctuated by shades of amber and bronze, conjuring the opulence of aged wine without ever feeling antiquated. Grounding this vibrant scheme are classic black-and-white tiles from Daltile’s Keystone collection, forming a unique mosaic floor pattern that provides a sharp, engaging contrast to the more natural materials used throughout.

For De Camps and King, every design decision, from the architectural framework and material selections to the curated artwork and the overall guest experience, serves a singular purpose: to foster a deeper appreciation of food, wine, and the rich history that underpins the brand’s identity.

Illuminating Stories: Art, Light, and Local Connections

A custom stained-glass installation, crafted from hand-blown rondels, pays homage to 1970s glasswork while subtly referencing the punt of a wine bottle. Custom lighting fixtures, including elegant linen pendants and sculptural chandeliers, are strategically arranged to complement natural light, creating intimate, moody vignettes throughout the space. The walls tell their own story, adorned with distinctive photographs and digital artwork by Californian artist Julia Crane, thoughtfully intertwined with pieces from Charlotte-based creatives. This curated collection not only enhances the aesthetic but also firmly connects the space back to its local community, ensuring a materiality that speaks volumes beyond the menu.

Challenging Expectations: The Spirit of Napa Bistro

At its heart, Napa Bistro and Wine Bar builds its identity around the transformative spirit of the 1976 Paris Wine Tasting – a global competition that dramatically shifted perceptions of Californian wines. For the FictionWorks team, the restaurant itself is a celebration of challenging expectations. “That same spirit shaped every aspect of the design,” they explain. “The restaurant draws from this spirit of transformation, not to recreate history, but to honor and reimagine it.” It’s a testament to innovation, a space where tradition meets contemporary flair, inviting patrons to savor not just a meal, but an experience steeped in history and forward-thinking design.
