“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” ~Albert Camus

Just over a year ago, a seemingly ordinary cold night led me to a bookstore café, a haven for quiet contemplation and meaningful connection. It was there, amidst the comforting aroma of coffee and old books, that I shared one of those rare, profound conversations – the kind that clarifies the muddled rush of life, making you feel perfectly aligned with the moment, on the cusp of significant progress. Leaving that bookstore, a sense of gratitude and purpose enveloped me, a feeling of being firmly on the right path. I drove home, lost in thought, until a red light on a major thoroughfare brought me to a halt.

The Sudden Jolt of Reality

A glance in my rear-view mirror shattered the tranquility. A car was hurtling towards me at an alarming speed, its driver showing no sign of slowing. In that split second, instinct took over. There was no time for thought, only a primal bracing for impact. I watched, helpless, as the driver swerved, yet failed to avert the inevitable. The collision, a violent strike to my car’s left taillight, was so forceful that the immediate aftermath remains a blur.

My next conscious memory was of being disoriented, my car now hundreds of feet from the intersection, resting precariously on the side of the road. The arrival of the police and paramedics brought a chaotic clarity. When asked about the incident, my words failed me; I stuttered, repeated myself, a paramedic confirming the obvious: I was in shock. It’s a peculiar state, where the mind grapples to process the incomprehensible while the body remains in a state of primal panic.

An Unexpected Call for Connection

My wife arrived, a beacon in the flashing chaos of police lights. We soon learned the other driver had fled, leaving a trail of damaged vehicles in his wake. As a small group of us gathered in the median, sharing our shock and stories, a poignant detail emerged: one woman was celebrating her birthday. Across the street, a bakery beckoned. An absurd, yet deeply human, impulse seized me – to buy her a cake. To celebrate her survival, our collective survival, amidst the wreckage and flashing lights. To salvage a moment of joy from the jaws of disaster.

The thought was perfect, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Imagine, standing in the middle of a major intersection after a violent crash, surrounded by damaged cars, and still having cake! I yearned to mark the simple, profound fact that we were all still here, that something good could still be made from this harrowing experience. But life, in its unpredictable fashion, had another lesson. We walked to the bakery, only to find it closed.

Standing on the grass between lanes of traffic, gazing at that locked door, something profound shifted within me. The tender, almost illogical desire to buy a stranger a birthday cake in the heart of a crash site felt as real, as impactful, as the collision itself.

Life’s Fragile Guarantees: Beyond the Illusion of Control

We often construct an elaborate illusion of predictability. We meticulously plan careers, nurture families, build futures, save diligently, and schedule every appointment. We enter bookstores, wait at traffic lights, and implicitly assume that the next moment will seamlessly mirror the last. And for the most part, it does. But then, a car barrels through a red light. A phone rings with devastating news. A loved one falls ill. Relationships morph, secure jobs vanish, and the future we so carefully envisioned dissolves, leaving us adrift in an unforeseen reality.

The stark truth is, we cannot fully shield ourselves from these seismic shifts. This realization can breed fear, a paralyzing dread of the unknown. Yet, it also holds the power to awaken us. Perhaps the fundamental question isn’t how to engineer a life so safe that nothing terrible can ever happen. Instead, it might be about consciously choosing the person we aspire to be in the face of life’s inevitable uncertainties – the choices we make, the depth of our love, and the grace with which we respond when our carefully laid plans unravel.

Finding Invincible Summer in Presence

For decades, I’ve sought answers, striving to comprehend how one can navigate life’s inherent uncertainty without being consumed by it. My journey has taught me that while I cannot control every external event, I can cultivate a profound presence to what is happening. I can observe my fear without letting it define me. I can acknowledge my longing for approval without allowing it to dictate my actions. I can confront the voids within, not by frantically filling them, but by approaching them with curiosity.

Today, I write this essay from a park bench, my bare feet grounded in the cool grass. The breeze whispers across my skin, and the laughter of children drifts from the playground. I am breathing. I am here. I am alive. Somewhere, someone sits at a red light, oblivious to the precariousness of the next moment. To be truly awake is to acknowledge that this moment, this breath, this existence, is not guaranteed – and yet, to choose to enter it fully, anyway. It means dedicating ourselves to the work that resonates with our soul and loving people fiercely, even as we understand the transient nature of all connections. I am also discovering how profoundly important it is, for me at least, to tell these stories.
