Igniting Innovation: Five Inaugural Maker Faires Set to Transform Communities This September

September is traditionally a vibrant month for the global Maker Faire movement, and this year, the excitement reaches new heights with the launch of five inaugural events spanning the globe. These first-time gatherings are more than just exhibitions; they are catalysts for community building, innovation, and the expansion of the maker spirit. For two decades, the Maker Faire Bay Area has witnessed the profound evolution of the maker community – fostering new connections, inspiring groundbreaking projects, cultivating educational opportunities, and even launching businesses. Crucially, it has ignited a lifelong passion for curiosity, competence, and creativity in countless young minds.

Whether you’re a seasoned inventor or simply curious, these new Faires offer an unparalleled opportunity to engage directly with makers, witness projects in action, ask questions, and try your hand at something new. You never know what idea might spark, or what passion might be ignited!

Curitiba, Brazil: A Resounding Return to Brazilian Ingenuity

This weekend marks a triumphant return for Maker Faire to Brazil, the first since 2018! After several years of meticulous planning, Maker Faire Curitiba is set to unfold on the campus of Positivo University in Curitiba, the bustling capital and largest city of Paraná state in southern Brazil. The event promises a rich program of workshops and lectures, featuring notable regional makers. Headlining the lineup is Marcelo Tas, a distinguished civil engineer, and the visionary creator and former host of Brazil’s most influential maker television show.

Tas, who hosted Discovery Channel’s Batalha Makers Brasil in 2019 – the nation’s first reality show dedicated to the maker movement – has been instrumental in bringing hands-on experimentation and creative problem-solving to a mainstream audience. His show captivated viewers with challenges spanning robotics, 3D printing, woodworking, and various forms of digital and traditional fabrication. His continued dedication to the maker movement is evident in his involvement with Maker Faire Curitiba, where he will share insights on creativity in the digital age. Calais, France: Cultivating Future Innovators

While many faires are set for this September, Calais is already looking ahead to its inaugural Education Day on Friday, September 11, 2026, demonstrating a forward-thinking commitment to nurturing the next generation of makers. The organizers firmly believe in empowering young people to understand their world, providing them with the tools to become active participants, and instilling a sense of shared responsibility for our planet. This dynamic vision underpins the Education Day of Maker Faire Calais.

Calais, with its rich history as a crucial gateway between the UK and France, is also home to a truly spectacular fire-breathing dragon sculpture. The Compagnie du Dragon’s audience development team will be a prominent feature at the Maker Faire, offering a diverse array of activities for both visitors and school groups. Their dedicated team of cultural mediators, including Director Carine Anot, and Cultural Mediation Officers Corneille Vanbelle-Lavoye and Noémie Dubois, will be on hand to engage and inspire.

Waterloo, Canada: Building the Future, One Innovation at a Time

The Waterloo Region in Ontario, Canada, has long been a crucible of innovation, a place where the future is actively built. On Sunday, September 13, this pioneering spirit will transform Waterloo Public Square as the Waterloo Maker Faire converts Uptown into an exhilarating playground for inventors, engineers, artists, tradespeople, entrepreneurs, educators, students, and the gloriously curious. Six distinct maker zones will fuel the fun: Science & Technology; Trades & Manufacturing; Arts & Culture; Food & Beverage; Sustainability; and Youth.

Youth engagement is truly at the heart of this event. Maker Faire provides young people with an invaluable opportunity to get up close and personal with technology, engineering, skilled trades, art, and entrepreneurship. More importantly, it empowers them to see themselves not merely as technology users, but as active creators who can make, hack, build, invent, and innovate.

Spotlight on Waterloo’s Innovations:

  • University of Waterloo Rocketry Team: Fresh off setting a world record in 2026, Waterloo’s Rocketry Team will showcase the engineering marvel behind Polaris—the highest-ever amateur liquid bi-propellant rocket.
  • University of Waterloo Robotics Team: As one of Waterloo’s premier autonomous robotics teams, UW Robotics has tackled diverse challenges from autonomous vehicles to Mars-inspired exploration, securing first place at the International Autonomous Robot Racing Challenge.
  • Waterloo Aerial Robotics Group (WARG): Pushing the boundaries of autonomous flight, WARG achieved national first place in 2025 at the Student Unmanned Aircraft Systems Competition with an autonomous aircraft designed for wildfire response.
  • Tinker Truck: This innovative mobile makerspace brings real tools, materials, and hands-on science and engineering directly to kids and families, fostering practical learning and creativity.

“The best thing about Maker Faire is that it brings out our innate curiosity and sense of wonder. Getting to interact with innovative ideas, see how things work, and meet the people who built them reminds us that there’s always something new to discover,” shares co-organizer Scott Patton.
