The Alchemist of Materials: Rick Tegelaar’s Journey from Garage Tinkerer to Design Innovator
In a world where design often begins with a pristine sketch, Dutch innovator Rick Tegelaar carves a strikingly different path. “Typically you start sketching to find out what something should look like, and then you follow with the development and construction process,” explains Tegelaar, “but for me, it’s the other way around.” His philosophy is rooted in a hands-on, material-first approach, a methodology forged in the tinkering haven of his family garage during childhood. This unique perspective has since defined a practice celebrated for its ability to transform the mundane and often overlooked into objects of unexpected beauty and form.
From Workshop to Art Academy: A Designer’s Evolution
Tegelaar’s journey into design was anything but conventional. At just 16, the untimely passing of his father coincided with his high school graduation, steering him away from traditional academia. Instead, he plunged into vocational school, mastering the intricate world of metalworking—lathes, milling machines, welding, and various fabrication techniques became his early language. While the program’s rigid rules eventually led to frustration, it was a pivotal moment, pushing him towards the more fluid discipline of industrial design, which he embraced wholeheartedly.
In 2007, Tegelaar enrolled at ArtEZ University of the Arts, a Dutch institution he fondly describes as “very creative and had an art academy kind of vibe.” Here, his understanding of design deepened significantly. “Suddenly I wasn’t just learning how to manufacture something,” Tegelaar recounts. “I was asking why products exist and how they should function.” A profound influence during this period was Dutch sculptor and furniture designer Wilma Sommers. Though she passed in 2011, her mentorship left an indelible mark: “She taught me to be brutally honest and to become a lateral thinker,” he reflects.
The Breakthrough: Crafting Elegance from Wire Mesh
Throughout his studies and beyond, Tegelaar remained dedicated to experimenting with humble materials—lumber, paper, and, notably, chicken wire. His explorations sought to uncover how these everyday elements could be manipulated into something entirely new. Wire mesh, in particular, presented a formidable challenge. “It’s typically a material with no meaning within the design context,” Tegelaar observes. “So one of the hardest things was shaping it in a very controlled way. If you succeed, it becomes beautiful: rhythmic and even. But if you don’t, it immediately starts to feel like a craft project. There’s a real tension between those two outcomes.”
The Birth of Meshmatics
This relentless pursuit of perfection led Tegelaar to engineer a custom machine and specialized tools. These innovations allowed him to achieve consistent, refined forms by stretching metal mesh over a mold, a technique far superior to traditional pressing. The result was an elegant silhouette capable of emitting a soft, ambient light. This breakthrough laid the groundwork for his self-produced Meshmatics lighting series, a collection so successful it provided the financial bedrock for his burgeoning practice.
From Independent Success to Global Recognition with Moooi
The distinctive Meshmatics series quickly captured the attention of Moooi, the renowned Dutch design brand co-founded by Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers. At Downtown Design in Dubai in 2016, Tegelaar showcased both his Filigree Floor Lamp—already in development with Moooi—and the experimental wire-mesh chandelier that would soon become the iconic Meshmatics. His booth, serendipitously located next to Marcel Wanders’, drew the co-founder’s eye, and the Meshmatics prototype swiftly transitioned into Tegelaar’s second product manufactured and distributed by the brand.
While the Moooi collaboration brought global reach, it also introduced a new dynamic. “I had been making the Meshmatics myself, and that brought so much energy into the studio,” Tegelaar recalls. “Deliveries arrived, machines hummed, and production maintained a constant momentum. It was always about making, and that was good for my creativity. Then, all of a sudden, that was gone. So I was in the studio, by myself, not producing, trying to come up with new ideas.”
The Pandemic Pivot: Ingenuity in Isolation
Following the Moooi transition, Tegelaar embarked on new ventures, including collaborations with Italian firms and site-specific commissions, yet none quite replicated the momentum of his earlier self-produced work. Then, the global pandemic brought the world, and his projects, to a grinding halt.
Introducing Tabby
Like many, Tegelaar initially anticipated a brief lockdown. Rather than succumbing to the disruption, he saw an opportunity. He envisioned an electric blanket, delving into circuitry and LEDs. However, as supply chains fractured and parts became scarce, the project stalled. Unfazed, Tegelaar turned to the readily available materials of plywood and wire, conceiving an oversized woven structure embedded with LEDs.
“By scaling up the weave dramatically, I discovered that each intersection naturally created a pocket where an LED could fit. In an afternoon, I had the essential principle worked out,” Tegelaar explains, detailing the genesis of what would become Tabby, a modular LED design. Once again, he engineered a custom machine to automate the repetitive aspects of the weave while meticulously preserving its handcrafted essence. After initial rejections from lighting companies, Tegelaar nearly abandoned Tabby. “Instead, I exhibited it at Big Art in Amsterdam, deciding that if people responded well, I’d continue,” Tegelaar remembers. “If not, I’d stop.” The positive reception affirmed his vision, ensuring Tabby’s journey continued, a testament to his unwavering commitment to material-driven innovation and resilience in the face of adversity.
