For a character whose signature look rarely extends beyond a simple red collar, Snoopy, the beloved beagle from Charles M. Schulz’s iconic Peanuts comic strip, boasts an unexpectedly illustrious career in high fashion. Over the decades, legendary design houses such as Chanel, Hermès, Dior, Armani, and Givenchy have all lent their creative genius to dressing the world’s most famous dog, with some of these sartorial masterpieces even gracing the hallowed halls of the Louvre in Paris in a 1990 exhibition.

Now, a new chapter in Snoopy’s fashion saga is unfolding in the heart of New York City, as a fresh generation of visionary designers steps up to reimagine the canine icon’s style.

Snoopy in Style NYC: A Multi-Sensory Experience

Opening its doors on September 2nd in Manhattan’s vibrant Meatpacking District, “Snoopy in Style NYC” is a sprawling 16,000-square-foot exhibition that promises an immersive journey through the Peanuts character’s profound influence across fashion, sports, music, and popular culture. Building upon a successful precursor in Paris, the New York iteration significantly expands the concept, featuring ten meticulously curated immersive zones developed by The Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center.

A Runway for the Ages: New Designs and Archival Treasures

At the very core of this captivating exhibition lies fashion. A stellar lineup of contemporary designers, including BODE, Christopher John Rogers, Coach, Collina Strada, GAPStudio (under the creative direction of Zac Posen), Kith, Levi’s, LUAR, and Sandy Liang, have crafted entirely new, bespoke looks for Snoopy and his loyal companion, Woodstock.

Melissa Menta, SVP of global brand and communications at Peanuts, highlights the creative freedom afforded to these designers: “They all have a way of interpreting looks for him that display some semblance of their own taste, but give Snoopy the personality and style he deserves.” This unbridled artistic license has resulted in a diverse and imaginative collection that truly reflects each designer’s unique aesthetic.

“Snoopy in Style NYC” masterfully juxtaposes these fresh commissions with archival pieces, creating a compelling visual timeline. This unique presentation eloquently demonstrates how different generations of designers have interpreted the seemingly simple yet profoundly versatile character over the years. “Snoopy is the only character who can claim a decades-long relationship with designers dating back to the early ’80s,” Menta observes. “It’s been incredible to see designers embrace designing for Snoopy and see how they make him ‘their own’ with their designs.”

The Art of Simplicity: Snoopy’s Timeless Design

Snoopy’s remarkable adaptability and enduring appeal can be traced back to Charles M. Schulz’s original design genius. With just a few visual elements—a white body, black ears and nose, and an economical hand-drawn line—Schulz created a character that, despite its visual simplicity, bursts with personality. “What I think is really at the heart of it for designers is the simple art and beauty of Charles Schulz’s line,” Menta explains. “That, coupled with the multi-faceted personality of Snoopy, makes it easy for designers to want to make their own mark.” This elegant simplicity provides a perfect canvas for designers to project their creativity.

More Than Just Fashion: Sports, Music, and NYC Connections

While fashion takes center stage, the exhibition extends its exploration into other facets of Snoopy’s cultural footprint. A dedicated tennis installation delves into Charles M. Schulz’s personal connection to the sport, showcasing his friendship with tennis legend Billie Jean King and his passionate advocacy for Title IX and the Women’s Sports Foundation.

Visitors can also immerse themselves in “Joe Cool’s Listening Lounge,” a tribute to the timeless music of Vince Guaraldi, whose jazz compositions became synonymous with the Peanuts specials. This zone features a DJ booth, rare albums, archival materials, and exclusive music-inspired merchandise, offering a nostalgic auditory experience.

The New York edition of the exhibition also pays homage to the comic strip’s deep roots in the city, highlighting that the newspaper syndicate responsible for Peanuts’ original debut was based right there in New York.

Since his first appearance in 1950, Snoopy has proven an unparalleled ability to transcend mediums and generations without losing his essence. His outfits may evolve, the designers dressing him may change, and the cultural landscapes around him may shift, but that iconic, spare silhouette remains instantly recognizable and universally cherished.

Don’t miss “Snoopy in Style NYC,” on view at 25 Little West 12th Street in New York City until September 26th.
