Breaking the Mold: Form Us With Love Reimagines the Design Showcase
The global design calendar is a relentless cycle of events, with traditional trade fairs often dominating the landscape. For decades, these convention center behemoths have offered a familiar, if uninspiring, experience: dimly lit halls, endless rows of white booths, and crowded aisles. While their core promise—to gather diverse design brands under one roof—remains compelling, the format itself has long felt stagnant. A growing trend of offsite city showrooms has emerged, offering a more intimate alternative, particularly at major events like Milan and New York Design Weeks. Yet, a truly disruptive challenge to this duality has remained elusive—until now.
Stockholm’s Creative Resilience
This year, the vibrant Stockholm design scene, often overshadowed by its Danish counterpart, faced a setback with the cancellation of its annual design week and furniture fair. Rather than succumbing to the void, the city’s influential independent studios and manufacturers rallied, orchestrating a series of more informal and authentic happenings. This collective effort fostered a fresher, less prescriptive exchange, proving the resilience and innovative spirit of Swedish design.
“Testing Grounds”: A New Paradigm for Engagement
At the forefront of this movement was local industrial design powerhouse Form Us With Love (FUWL) and their groundbreaking “Testing Grounds Showroom” project. FUWL seized the opportunity to critically re-evaluate both the traditional showroom and the broader fair model. Their vision brought together a curated selection of local and international industry leaders for an extended, four-month showcase (running through the end of May).
Collaborative Innovation in Action
The “Testing Grounds” initiative saw FUWL collaborate intimately with each partner on new concepts, moving far beyond a simple display. Participants included Dutch textile innovator BYBORRE, Swedish acoustics specialist BAUX, modular storage system pioneer String, ergonomic office chair manufacturer Savo, and French sustainable flooring expert Tarkett. This long-term, hyper-contextualized presentation champions a truly demonstrative approach, allowing visitors to engage deeply with solutions in a real-world setting.
Unlike the fleeting, often superficial interactions at conventional fairs, “Testing Grounds” encourages a slower, more deliberate exploration. Visitors are given the time and space to form their own substantive critical assessments, fostering a level of engagement impossible within a sprawling, disassociative convention center environment.
Beyond the Panel: Immersive Workshops
Central to the experience is a dynamic series of live event workshops, designed to push the boundaries far beyond typical panel discussions. This meticulously coordinated program delves into the fundamental question of what a showroom truly represents today, exploring it through a multifaceted lens. Topics span from the intricacies of color accuracy in digital workflows and the critical role of sound technology in communicating brand value, to how showrooms themselves can evolve into powerful decision-making tools.
