A Bold Brew: Voyager Craft Coffee’s Newest Outpost
Forget the mundane, cookie-cutter coffee shops. For its latest venture in San José, California, Voyager Craft Coffee tasked Studio BANAA with creating something truly extraordinary. The result? A vibrant, maximalist micro-café that defies its compact footprint, drawing inspiration from the playful exuberance of 1980s Italian Memphis style and the whimsical charm of Pee-wee’s Playhouse.
This sixth collaboration between Studio BANAA and Voyager Craft Coffee marks a significant evolution in their visual language. While maintaining brand consistency, the designers pushed the boundaries of color and form, delivering an experience that is both familiar and refreshingly audacious. “This is a progression of the brand, but for this project they wanted to go all out on the color,” explains Dane Bunton, co-founder and managing principal of Studio BANAA.
From Seafood Spot to Sculptural Sanctuary
Ingenious Design in a Compact Space
Transforming a mere 1,000-square-foot former seafood restaurant into a condensed maximalist environment required a visionary approach. Studio BANAA treated the linear space as a painter’s canvas, unfolding it into a longitudinal composition that maximizes visual impact. Nastaran Mousavi, Studio BANAA co-founder and design director, drew inspiration from an unexpected source: the paper cut-outs of Henri Matisse.
“I was inspired by Matisse and his collages to bring in materials and textures in a very cohesive way,” Mousavi notes, highlighting the thoughtful layering of elements that define the space.
A Symphony of Form and Function
The café’s heart is a striking, sculptural coffee bar, clad in vibrant pink perforated metal and seamlessly integrated with shelving. Its distinctive cylindrical, skirted form masterfully organizes the flow of both customers and staff, serving as an undeniable focal point. High-touch surfaces benefit from lacquers and powder-coat finishes, ensuring cleanliness while adding crucial depth within the tight confines.
Curves are a recurring motif, echoed overhead and throughout the interior. Playful scalloped-edge pendants and a whimsical squiggle LED inset illuminate the space, complementing cushioned benches and sleek blue steel tables. Wavy wall trims and mirrored window ledges further enhance the dynamic, layered aesthetic.
Artistry and Origin: Murals That Tell a Story
Adding another layer of visual intrigue are two custom murals featuring abstracted topography. These vibrant artworks, rendered in saturated blues, greens, and corals, are derived from maps of Brazil and Ethiopia—countries where Voyager sources its premium coffee beans. Yet, these aren’t literal representations; instead, they evoke imagined landscapes, connecting patrons to the global journey of their coffee in a deeply artistic way.
Despite its compact size, this coffee spot makes a grand statement. “We didn’t have as many architectural moves to play around with, and so it is a patchwork of elements that somehow come together,” Mousavi concludes. “This is a small space with a big presence.” The design, expertly captured by Mikiko Kikuyama’s photography, truly exemplifies how thoughtful, bold design can elevate even the most modest of spaces.
