Winter’s Embrace: Morocco Issues Orange Alert for Widespread Snowfall
Rabat, Morocco – As winter tightens its grip, Morocco’s meteorological authorities have issued an orange-level alert, signaling significant snowfall expected to blanket several provinces from Tuesday morning through Wednesday night. Residents and travelers in the affected mountainous regions are urged to exercise extreme caution as road conditions are anticipated to become challenging.
Heavy Snowfall Expected in Key Provinces
The General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) forecasts that snowfall will commence on Tuesday at 6 a.m. and persist until 11 p.m. on Wednesday. Areas situated above 1,400 meters are particularly susceptible to heavy accumulations. Provinces such as Azilal, Beni Mellal, Ifrane, and Boulemane are bracing for substantial snow, with depths ranging between 20 and 40 centimeters.
Lighter Accumulations Across Other Regions
While some areas face intense snowfall, other provinces are expected to see lighter, yet still impactful, accumulations. Between 10 and 20 centimeters of snow are predicted for Al Haouz, Taza, Chefchaouen, Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Figuig, Khenifra, Sefrou, Al Hoceima, and Guercif. These alerts are a common occurrence during Morocco’s winter months, as the Middle Atlas and High Atlas ranges frequently experience significant snow events.
Safety First: Travel Advisories and Precautions
Authorities are emphasizing the importance of safety during this alert period. Difficult road conditions, including reduced visibility and snow accumulation, are highly probable. Non-essential travel, especially on high-altitude routes, should be avoided to mitigate risks. For those whose travel is unavoidable, it is crucial to monitor weather updates diligently and ensure vehicles are adequately prepared for winter conditions, including appropriate tires and emergency supplies.
Furthermore, as temperatures are expected to drop considerably with the snowfall, residents are advised to take necessary precautions against the cold. Staying informed and prepared will be key to navigating the winter weather safely across Morocco’s affected provinces.
