Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck’s AI Startup, InterPositive, Reshaping Film Production

In a significant move that blurs the lines between Hollywood stardom and cutting-edge technology, streaming giant Netflix has announced the acquisition of InterPositive, an AI startup founded by acclaimed actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck. This landmark deal not only brings InterPositive’s innovative tools for film and television production under Netflix’s wing but also sees Affleck himself joining the company as a senior adviser.

The Genesis of InterPositive: Affleck’s Vision for AI

Founded in 2022, InterPositive emerged from Ben Affleck’s keen observation of the nascent rise of AI in production and a perceived gap in existing tools. Affleck articulated his motivation, stating a “responsibility to [his] peers and our industry, to protect the power of human creativity and the people behind it.” He believes Netflix, with its track record of “applying and scaling technology responsibly,” is the ideal partner to elevate InterPositive’s mission.

“I wanted to build a workflow that captures what happens on a set, with vocabulary that matched the language cinematographers and directors already spoke and included the kind of consistency and controls they would expect,” Affleck explained regarding his company’s foundational philosophy.

Beyond Generative AI: How InterPositive Works

Unlike many AI models designed for generating visual content from text prompts, InterPositive’s technology takes a different approach. Its core focus is on ingesting “dailies” – the raw footage captured during ongoing productions – and transforming them into refined assets for the post-production pipeline. This specialized application allows filmmakers to more efficiently tackle crucial tasks such as mixing, color correction, and the development of special effects.

In a joint video with Netflix’s Chief Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone and Head Content Officer Bela Bajaria, Affleck highlighted the practical applications of InterPositive’s customized models. These tools can manipulate backgrounds, reframe shots, and seamlessly remove unwanted visual elements like stunt wires, all with enhanced speed and ease. Crucially, Affleck emphasized that InterPositive aims to liberate actors to concentrate on their performances, freeing them from the “logistical, difficult, technical stuff.”

Tailored Solutions for Creative Control

InterPositive’s unique selling proposition lies in its project-specific training. By tailoring its models to individual productions, the startup ensures that the generated assets are not generic but rather unique and perfectly aligned with a filmmaker’s distinct vision. This reliance on actual production dailies underscores the necessity of human input, ensuring the technology serves as an enhancement rather than a replacement for creative talent.

The acquisition includes the entire 16-member team of engineers and researchers from InterPositive, who will transition to Netflix. While Netflix has yet to detail the specific rollout plan for InterPositive’s technology across its internal projects, the strategic move signals a clear intent to integrate advanced AI into its production workflows. The streamer is undoubtedly banking on these innovations to streamline processes and elevate the quality of its content, even if audiences remain largely unaware of the AI-powered magic happening behind the scenes.
