Online retail giant Amazon.com experienced significant disruptions across its platform on Thursday, leaving countless customers unable to log in, complete purchases, or access services like Amazon Music. The widespread technical issues, which lasted for over three hours, prompted a surge of user complaints before the company confirmed a resolution.

Temporary Halt to Online Shopping

For a substantial period on Thursday, Amazon users encountered a frustrating array of problems. Reports flooded Downdetector, indicating a sharp spike in issues related to checkout processes, product searches, and account logins. The disruption wasn’t confined to a single interface; both the Amazon website and its mobile applications were affected, leading to a standstill for many attempting to engage with the e-commerce giant.

Several staffers at The Verge, who initially reported on the incident, personally experienced the glitches. Attempts to view product pages often resulted in a generic “sorry, something went wrong” error message. Even when pages did load, crucial pricing information was frequently missing. Users also reported being repeatedly logged out of their accounts, making it impossible to add items to carts or finalize transactions. Compounding the frustration, even the parts of the site that remained partially functional suffered from noticeably slow loading times.

The Root Cause: A Software Code Deployment

Responding to inquiries, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the issues have now been resolved. Jennie Bryant, speaking on behalf of Amazon, issued a statement: “We’re sorry that some customers may have temporarily experienced issues while shopping. We have resolved the issue, which was related to a software code deployment, and website and app are now running smoothly.”

This explanation clarifies that the outage stemmed from an internal software update or deployment gone awry, rather than external factors. Notably, the company explicitly distanced the incident from recent AWS outages reported in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, which were attributed to drone strikes. This confirms the US and other global regions experienced a distinct, internal system failure.

Smooth Sailing Resumes

With the “software code deployment” issue now rectified, Amazon assures its customers that all services, including shopping, streaming, and account management, are operating without further impediment. The swift resolution underscores the company’s efforts to maintain reliability, even as minor technical hiccups can have widespread implications for its vast global user base.
