ADT’s Strategic Move: Embracing Next-Gen Smart Home Security

In a significant stride towards redefining the landscape of home security, ADT, the venerable 150-year-old industry leader, has announced the acquisition of Origin Wireless for a staggering $170 million. This strategic move is set to dramatically enhance ADT’s smart home and security offerings by integrating Origin Wireless’s groundbreaking AI-powered Wi-Fi motion sensing technology.

The Innovation at Origin Wireless: Sensing Beyond the Camera

Origin Wireless stands out for its pioneering work in Wi-Fi motion sensing. The company developed sophisticated algorithms that analyze how wireless radio frequency (RF) signals propagate and reflect within a given space. By meticulously interpreting these signal patterns, their technology can accurately detect the presence and movement of people and objects without the need for traditional, dedicated sensors. This innovative approach promises a less intrusive, more comprehensive security solution.

A Smarter, More Contextual Security Experience

ADT plans to seamlessly integrate Origin Wireless’s technology into its existing smart home and security systems. The primary goal is to introduce a new layer of intelligence that provides crucial context when security alarms are triggered. This advanced understanding of in-home activity is expected to significantly reduce the incidence of false alarms, a common frustration for both homeowners and security providers.

Furthermore, by leveraging ubiquitous Wi-Fi infrastructure, future ADT systems could require fewer physical sensors throughout a home, simplifying installation and reducing visual clutter. Omar Khan, ADT’s executive vice president and chief business officer, emphasized the transformative potential of this acquisition.

“This acquisition represents a major step forward in our vision to deliver a safer, smarter home that understands context, recognizes risk, and provides peace of mind, all while protecting customer privacy,” says Khan. “By integrating AI sensing into the home, we plan to add a new intelligence layer, elevating traditional security and smart home capabilities by allowing ADT to verify human presence, classify and analyze motion, and add context to alarm events and other conditions within the home.”

Proven Technology with a Track Record

Origin Wireless’s AI sensing platform isn’t new to the consumer market. Its technology has already powered several notable products, demonstrating its reliability and versatility. This includes the now-discontinued Linksys Aware feature found on some of the company’s wireless routers, which offered whole-home motion detection. More recently, it’s been a core component of SpaceSense, a feature that transforms WiZ’s smart lights into sophisticated motion sensors. Origin Wireless also launched its own standalone Wi-Fi-based motion-sensing solution, Hex Home, in 2021.

Future Outlook: Partnerships and Market Impact

ADT has confirmed its commitment to honoring existing licensing agreements. The company will continue to license Origin Wireless’s technology to partners like Verisure, a prominent security system provider in Europe and South America, as well as Philips Hue and WiZ (both Signify brands). ADT also stated it would be evaluating new strategic partnerships, signaling a broader vision for the technology’s reach.

This acquisition positions ADT at the forefront of smart home security innovation, promising a future where homes are not just secured, but intelligently aware. The integration of Wi-Fi motion sensing could set a new industry standard, offering homeowners enhanced safety, greater convenience, and unparalleled peace of mind.
