In the realm of design, materiality is paramount. It dictates not just how objects perform, but how they resonate with our innate human desire for tactile and sensory engagement. Pushing the very limits of what’s possible with natural materials, the collaboration between renowned design studio nendo and Italian wood veneer specialist ALPI culminates in “Layered Nature”—a captivating exhibition that redefines the perception and application of wood veneer.
“Layered Nature”: Where Ancient Geometries Meet Modern Simplicity
Housed within the ALPI showroom, “Layered Nature” is more than just a display; it’s a site-specific installation that masterfully blends the ancient architectural grandeur of Italian palazzos with the minimalist elegance characteristic of Japanese design. This unique fusion creates an immersive environment where the material itself becomes the protagonist, inviting contemplation rather than conventional interaction.
Introducing the Innovative Veneer Collections: Kasumi and Futae
At the heart of the exhibition are two groundbreaking veneer collections developed by nendo for ALPI: Kasumi and Futae.
- Kasumi: The Essence of Mist
Meaning ‘mist’ in Japanese, Kasumi embodies a delicate, ethereal quality. Achieved through an innovative technical process, two distinct hues of veneer are meticulously combined, creating subtle, nuanced shading that imparts an extraordinary sense of depth. Available in Kasumi Blue and Kasumi Grey, this collection evokes the gentle, shifting beauty of natural phenomena. - Futae: A Dynamic Bark Texture
Futae, on the other hand, draws inspiration directly from the raw beauty of tree bark. It features two wood grains rendered on different scales, resulting in a distinctive, dynamic texture. This intricate layering gives Futae a vibrant, almost living quality, mirroring the organic complexity of its source. It is presented in Futae White and Futae Grey, offering versatile natural tones.
Beyond Utility: Crafting Emotion Through Form
The pieces showcased within “Layered Nature” intentionally diverge from conventional functionality. Oki Sato, principal architect at nendo, articulates this philosophy: “The pieces on display were not designed to be conventionally functional, but to emphasize the material itself. They showcase the eminent skill ALPI possesses in creating curves with wood veneer. They intentionally incorporate shapes devoid of a clear way to use them, so as to shift the focus from function to emotion.” This approach allows the inherent beauty and technical prowess of the ALPI veneers to shine, transforming wood into a medium for pure aesthetic and emotional expression.
A Synergy of Expertise: ALPI and nendo
This collaboration is a testament to the shared values of both entities. ALPI’s unwavering commitment to celebrating the noble qualities of wood, combined with nendo’s cerebral and experimental design methodology, forms a powerful synergy. By uniting deep material research with innovative artistic experimentation, each partner enriches the project with perspectives and capabilities that might otherwise remain undiscovered. The result is a collection and an exhibition that not only push the boundaries of wood veneer but also inspire a deeper appreciation for the artistry of materials.
