Gold for Revolutionary Dental Instrument
A Gold Medal was awarded for an ingenious endodontic instrument, a testament to the collaborative brilliance of Professor Sonia Ghoul and Professor Abdelwahed Barkaoui from UIR’s CRESS and LERMA laboratories. This pioneering dental tool is designed to self-recover in the event of a fracture during a root canal procedure – a common complication that can lead to significant challenges for practitioners and distress for patients. By integrating a recovery mechanism directly into the instrument, this innovation drastically reduces patient risks, alleviates procedural stress, and minimizes the need for more invasive interventions. It marks a paradigm shift in endodontics, embedding a solution for potential technical failure within the tool itself.
Bronze for Smart Asthma Monitoring System: iRespire
The second accolade, a Bronze Medal, recognized iRespire – a sophisticated smart asthma monitoring system. Developed by Nouhaila Fraihi and Professor Ouassim Karrakchou at UIR’s TIC Lab, iRespire leverages cutting-edge Edge AI technology to offer continuous, personalized monitoring for asthma patients. The system ingeniously combines a smart inhaler, an electronic stethoscope, environmental sensors, and a connected watch to analyze real-time physiological and environmental data. Its primary objective is to predict asthma attacks before they manifest, thereby enhancing medical management through data-driven insights. This project represents a significant leap towards more predictive and connected healthcare solutions.
