Rabat – Morocco is bracing for an extended period of turbulent weather, with the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) issuing warnings of continued instability across various parts of the country. Residents can expect heavy rainfall, strong winds, and even snowfall in some regions, persisting until the middle of next week.
A Week of Unpredictable Skies
The DGM’s latest bulletin indicates that the current pattern of rainfall and showers, which has already led to unusually heavy downpours and localized flooding in northern provinces, is set to continue. While a gradual stabilization is anticipated from Wednesday onwards, the coming days will demand vigilance.
Immediate Outlook: Rain and Gusts Dominate
Today’s forecast points to widespread rainy conditions accompanied by significant winds. Areas such as the Rif, Loukkos, and the Tangier region are expected to experience particularly heavy rain and showers. Further south, the southwest, Saiss, High Atlas, Middle Atlas, and the basins of Ouled Abdoun, Ganntour, and Oulmes will also see mostly cloudy skies with intermittent rainfall.
Winds are projected to be moderate to fairly strong, impacting Tangier, the plains north of Essaouira, Saiss, the Rif, the Mediterranean coast, and the broader Atlas regions, extending eastward.
Temperature Variations Across the Kingdom
Temperatures will present a stark contrast across Morocco. The Atlas Mountains will shiver with maximums between 2 and 10°C, while the Rif experiences 6 to 13°C. In the far south and southeast, a warmer range of 27 to 33°C is expected. Other regions will see more moderate temperatures, typically between 14 and 19°C.
Thursday’s Continued Downpour and Dust
The unsettled conditions are set to persist into Thursday. Significant rainfall is forecast for the Rif, Tangier area, Loukkos, Gharb, and Saiss. The Middle Atlas, nearby western areas, Oulmes, and parts of the northern plains will also receive rain. Winds will maintain their moderate to fairly strong intensity across the north, Rif, Atlas regions, and the east, with the added element of dust in eastern and far southern areas.
Nighttime temperatures will drop considerably, ranging from -1 to 5°C in the Atlas and 4 to 10°C in the Rif and high plateaus. A slight increase in daytime temperatures is expected.
Friday’s Forecast: Snow and Stronger Winds
Friday will see unstable weather continue, with rain and showers affecting the Rif, the Atlas Mountains and their western fringes, northern eastern areas, and both northern and central regions. A notable development is the expectation of snowfall in the Atlas Mountains, while the northern parts of the southern provinces will experience partly cloudy skies.
Winds will intensify, becoming relatively strong with powerful gusts in the northern and central parts of the country. This will coincide with a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures, making conditions feel colder.
Looking Ahead: Stabilization on the Horizon
The DGM confirms that rain and showers are expected to continue in the northwest until Tuesday of next week. However, a gradual shift towards more stable conditions is predicted, with the weather becoming partly cloudy at times over the far northwest starting Wednesday.
Moderate to strong winds will remain a feature in several regions, particularly Tangier, the Rif, the Atlas Mountains, the eastern region, northern coasts, and the upper-southern provinces. Despite the turbulent week, the DGM anticipates a slight general rise in daytime temperatures across these regions, though nights will remain cool.
