Eschewing superfluous ornamentation and fleeting trends, acclaimed interior architect Marie Claire Mrad approached this ambitious project as a deep meditation on substance: how the interplay of weight, texture, and light can intrinsically shape domestic life in a region defined by intense sun, dramatic shadows, and pervasive heat.
This remarkable residence, a complete renovation of a 2007 villa originally conceived with traditional Arabic architectural influences, is home to Christopher Hani, owner and CEO of Bull Contracting, and his family. From its inception, the vision for the home transcended mere living space; it was an opportunity to push the boundaries of craftsmanship, detailing, and construction techniques. This shared ambition between Mrad and Hani is palpable throughout an interior that boldly redefines conventional partitions through material articulation, allowing structure itself to become the primary ornament.
Radical Openness: Blurring the Lines Between Inside and Out
Spanning approximately 4,575 square feet indoors, complemented by an additional 3,230 square feet of outdoor living, the villa is anchored by a radically open ground floor. All original interior walls were meticulously removed, creating an uninterrupted flow between living, dining, and bar spaces that seamlessly extend towards the expansive terrace and lush garden beyond. Far from being concealed, structural columns are elegantly wrapped in brushed stainless steel, transforming them into subtle vertical markers that organize the vast plan without ever enclosing it.
This profound sense of openness is not merely an aesthetic choice; it is a deliberate response to Dubai’s unique climate and lifestyle. A custom-engineered facade allows the entire ground floor to effortlessly open onto the terrace with a single touch, as glass panels slide away to one side. This ingenious design expands the interior outwards, dissolving the traditional threshold between inside and outside – a gesture perfectly attuned to Dubai’s vibrant culture of evening gatherings and al fresco living.
The Poetic Language of Materials and Light
Material selection emerged as the project’s central design language. Mrad meticulously chose finishes for their tactile depth and their inherent ability to mature gracefully over time: brushed stainless steel, robust lava stone, sophisticated gunmetal steel, and rich dark-stained wood form the foundational backbone of the interior. These are not superficial applications, but elements imbued with visual weight, grounding the home and imbuing it with a profound sense of permanence. The color palette echoes this philosophy, dominated by deep charcoal, steel gray, and dark stone hues, subtly softened by carefully placed accents of desaturated blue. The resulting effect is intentionally moody, yet remarkably warm and inviting.
“The challenge,” Mrad explains, “was finding the balance – allowing the materials to be bold without overwhelming the sense of home.” The masterful solution lies in restraint: color is used sparingly, texture performs the heavy lifting, and light is elevated to the status of a material in its own right. At the heart of the residence, a sculptural staircase ascends beneath a strategically placed skylight, drawing natural daylight deep into the home’s core. As the sun traverses the sky, light dances across stainless steel surfaces, reflects off dark mirrors, and animates the stairwell with an ever-changing, ethereal glow. This vertical axis serves as both a spatial anchor and a moment of quiet, captivating drama.
The dialogue between light and matter culminates in its most expressive form at the bar: a magnificent 13-foot Patagonia stone slab, meticulously backlit to reveal its breathtaking crystalline interior. Shipped from Lebanon and installed with exacting precision, this glowing stone acts as a luminous counterpoint to the surrounding darker materials. By night, it transforms into the emotional epicenter of the home, beautifully reinforcing the owners’ passion for hosting and convivial gatherings.
Bespoke Craftsmanship and Curated Global Artistry
Every piece of furniture and lighting fixture was custom-designed for the project by Mrad’s Beirut studio, then expertly fabricated and shipped to Dubai. This bespoke approach ensures an unwavering consistency in scale, proportion, and materiality throughout the residence, from custom seating arrangements to site-specific lighting elements that harmoniously echo the home’s architectural rhythms.
Art and objects were curated with equally meticulous care. A striking Spider chandelier by Mb-Designlab Paris anchors the main living area along the entrance axis, while a monumental face mask sculpture by Cape Town artist Marco Oliver commands attention on the double-height stair wall. Elsewhere, a vibrant painting from Bali and sculptural Dragon and Buddha figures from Thailand introduce poignant moments of cultural resonance and narrative depth, reinforcing the home’s sophisticated global yet deeply grounded sensibility.
