Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin, a name synonymous with ambitious rocketry and space exploration, is now setting its sights on a new kind of space race: ultra-high-speed satellite internet. Introducing the TeraWave network, a bold initiative promising an astounding 6 terabits of bandwidth available anywhere on Earth, for both upload and download. This isn’t your typical consumer broadband play; TeraWave is carving out a distinct niche in the burgeoning satellite internet market.

Beyond Consumer Broadband: A Network for Critical Operations

Unlike competitors such as SpaceX’s Starlink or Amazon’s nascent Kuiper network, TeraWave is not designed to connect individual homes or everyday users directly. While Starlink and Amazon’s Leo Ultra antennas are pushing towards gigabit speeds for a broader customer base, TeraWave aims for a maximum of about 100,000 customers, specifically targeting “tens of thousands of enterprise, data center, and government users.” This strategic focus allows Blue Origin to concentrate on delivering immense bandwidth and robust connectivity tailored to the most demanding applications.

At the heart of TeraWave’s ambitious promise is a sophisticated “multi-orbit” design comprising 5,408 optically connected satellites. The majority of these will reside in low-Earth orbit (LEO), providing ground connections at speeds up to 144Gbps. However, the true innovation lies in the 128 satellites positioned in medium-Earth orbit (MEO), which are engineered to deliver the staggering 6-terabit bidirectional connections.

This layered approach, combining the responsiveness of LEO with the immense capacity of MEO, is crucial for achieving such massive throughput and global coverage. The optical connections between satellites ensure a high-speed backbone, minimizing latency and maximizing data transfer efficiency across the network.

Blue Origin anticipates commencing satellite deployments near the end of 2027.
