Announced in 2023, Aliro emerges as an open standard for smart locks and digital keys, establishing a standardized communication method between smart locks, smartphones, and smartwatches, irrespective of their manufacturer or operating system. Its primary goal is to democratize features previously exclusive to certain ecosystems, such as Apple’s Home Key.
Apple Home Key has long allowed iPhone users to tap-to-unlock using NFC, mirroring the convenience of tap-to-pay. More recently, Apple integrated UWB-powered hands-free unlocking, enabling doors to unlock automatically as a user approaches. With Aliro, these sophisticated functionalities will now extend to Android phones and other smart home platforms. This means that whether you use a Galaxy, Pixel, or iPhone, every household member can enjoy the same seamless, device-as-key experience for compatible smart locks.
The Technology Behind Aliro
Aliro-certified locks will leverage one or more communication options to facilitate unlocking:
- Near Field Communication (NFC): A simple tap of your phone or watch against the lock for instant access.
- Bluetooth LE (BLE): Allows your phone to initiate an unlock command as you get close to the door.
- BLE plus Ultrawide Band (UWB): Enables truly hands-free unlocking, detecting your approach and unlocking the door even if your phone remains in your bag or pocket.
It’s important to note that for these protocols to function, locks must be equipped with compatible radios and antennas. Consequently, many existing smart lock models may not be upgradeable to support Aliro, suggesting a wave of new, Aliro-ready devices on the horizon.
Industry Collaboration for a Unified Future
Aliro is the product of extensive industry-wide collaboration, bringing together tech giants and leading lock manufacturers. Key developers include Apple, Google, and Samsung, alongside major lock makers such as Allegion, Assa Abloy, Qualcomm, and NXP. This broad coalition underscores the standard’s potential for widespread adoption. Several prominent lock manufacturers, including Schlage, Kwikset, X-Things/U-Tec, Level, and Nuki, have already announced their plans to integrate Aliro support into their upcoming products.
Unparalleled Security and Offline Reliability
A significant advantage of Aliro over existing solutions lies in its direct, secure communication pathway between a user’s smartphone or wearable and the smart lock. Crucially, there’s no need to open an app, and no cloud infrastructure is involved. Credentials are securely stored on the user’s device, and communication between the device and the lock employs robust asymmetric encryption. This cloud-independent architecture ensures that Aliro will continue to function seamlessly even when your phone is offline or lacks network service, providing the same reliability as a traditional physical key.
The CSA has dedicated the past two years to meticulously building the Aliro 1.0 specification, its certification program, and a comprehensive supporting test system.
