Rabat, Morocco – The Kingdom of Morocco is bracing for a significant weather event as the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued a red-level alert, forecasting heavy rainfall, substantial snowfall, and powerful winds across several provinces this Friday and Saturday.

Torrential Downpours Expected

Residents in various regions are advised to prepare for intense precipitation. The DGM’s red-level alert highlights that mountainous areas within the provinces of Agadir Ida-Outanane, Taroudant, and Essaouira are expected to experience exceptionally heavy rainfall, with downpours estimated between 80 to 120 millimeters. This deluge is anticipated from Friday at 5 p.m. through Saturday at 6 p.m.

Moderate Rainfall Zones

During the same period, moderately heavy rain, ranging between 30 and 45 millimeters, is forecast for the provinces of Safi, Sidi Bennour, El Jadida, Chtouka Ait Baha, Inzegane, Ait Melloul, and Tiznit. The weather office also indicates that Chichaoua, Al Haouz, and Youssoufia will be similarly affected by these significant rainfall levels.

Snow Blankets High Altitudes

As temperatures drop, snowfall is set to transform Morocco’s higher elevations. From Saturday midnight until 6 p.m., altitudes above 1,600 meters in the provinces of Midelt, Tinghir, Azilal, Ouarzazate, Al Haouz, Taroudant, and Chichaoua are expected to receive between 10 to 30 centimeters of fresh snow. This could lead to challenging conditions in these mountainous regions.

Gale-Force Winds to Batter Coasts and Interior

Adding to the severe weather outlook, strong to locally very strong winds are predicted to sweep across the country. From Friday midnight until 11 p.m., gusts ranging from 95 to 105 kilometers per hour are expected to impact the provinces of Al Haouz and Chichaoua, posing potential risks.

Widespread Wind Warnings

Other areas will also experience significant wind speeds. Provinces such as El Jadida, Sidi Bennour, Safi, Essaouira, Midelt, and Azilal can anticipate winds between 90 to 100 kilometers per hour. Furthermore, Youssoufia, Figuig, Jerada, Oujda-Angad, Taourirt, El Kelaa Seraghna, Marrakech, Rehamna, Agadir Ida-Outanane, and Taroudant will face winds ranging from 75 to 90 kilometers per hour. These conditions could lead to disruptions and require caution from residents and travelers.

The DGM urges all residents in the affected areas to exercise extreme caution, follow local authority guidelines, and stay updated on the latest weather advisories as this intense weather front moves across the Kingdom.
