Oslo, Norway-based startup Spoor has made significant strides in developing computer vision technology to track and identify bird populations and migration patterns. Founded in 2021, Spoor’s mission is to reduce the impact of wind turbines on local bird populations, and their innovative software has proven to be a game-changer in the industry.

Accurate Bird Identification and Tracking

Spoor’s AI-powered software uses high-resolution cameras to detect birds within a 2.5-kilometer radius, with an impressive accuracy rate of 96%. This technology allows wind farm operators to better plan the location of wind farms and navigate migration patterns, ultimately reducing the risk of bird collisions.

Industry Recognition and Expansion

Spoor has gained significant traction, working with over 20 of the world’s largest energy companies across three continents. The startup has also partnered with Rio Tinto, a London-based mining giant, to track bats. Additionally, Spoor has received interest from other industries, such as airports and aquaculture farms.

Funding and Future Plans

Spoor recently secured an €8 million ($9.3 million) Series A round led by SET Ventures, with participation from Ørstead Ventures and Superorganism. The company’s CEO, Ask Helseth, predicts that interest in this type of technology will continue to grow as regulators crack down on wind farms.
