This unexpected turn of events is merely the latest chapter in a long-standing tradition of deliveries taking place in the back seats of taxis and ride-sharing vehicles.
A Legacy of Unplanned Arrivals
From London to Los Angeles, expectant mothers have been racing against biology in the back seats of taxis and Ubers for decades. One notable instance was the mother in India who named her son Uber after giving birth to him en route to the hospital, with the driver reportedly helping in the delivery. In 2017, a California couple welcomed their baby in an Uber during Shabbat, leaving them to ponder the possibility of naming their child after the ride-sharing service.
Automation Enters the Scene
Silicon Valley has now automated this experience, at least partially. Waymo’s remote team detected “unusual activity” and called 911, although the vehicle arrived at the hospital before emergency services. This incident marks the second birth in a Waymo vehicle, with the company stating that a Phoenix baby got there first.
Waymo’s Response
A Waymo spokesperson dryly commented, “While this is a very rare occurrence, some of our newest riders just can’t wait to experience their first Waymo ride.” The vehicle in question was promptly removed for cleaning, bringing an end to this unexpected journey.
