Ayaneo’s First Android Phone: A Retro Gaming Revival
In a move that harks back to the early days of gaming on mobile, Ayaneo, a retro gaming handheld manufacturer, has unveiled the design of its first Android phone. Dubbed the Pocket Play, this device bears an uncanny resemblance to the 2011 Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, a pioneering gaming smartphone that allowed players to experience console-quality gaming on the go.
The Pocket Play boasts a sleek design, with a screen that slides up to reveal a full set of physical controls, including a D-pad, ABXY face buttons, and two circular touch pads. The phone also features twin sets of shoulder buttons on the back, but disappointingly, there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack in sight.
While the design may evoke memories of the Xperia Play, the Pocket Play is significantly more refined and polished. However, Ayaneo has kept the specifications under wraps, with the company only confirming a “soon” launch date for the device. The Kickstarter campaign page provides no details on the phone’s specs, leaving fans and potential buyers in the dark.
The Pocket Play is not the only gaming phone to draw inspiration from the Xperia Play. Anbernic’s RG Slide, another retro gaming handheld manufacturer, released a similar device earlier this year. While the RG Slide is a more affordable option, priced at $189, the Pocket Play is expected to be a more premium device, likely commanding a higher price tag.
